What Is Extended Warranty Protection?

An extended warranty is an insurance policy that prolongs an item’s warranty coverage beyond what the original manufacturer’s warranty offers.

Extended warranty coverage can help reimburse you in case of a covered product’s defect or failure.

What To Look For With Extended Warranty Protection

When comparing extended warranty coverage policies from credit cards, you should look at these 4 metrics:

  • Maximum coverage per item/claim
  • Maximum coverage per calendar year
  • Maximum allowable original warranty length to qualify for extended warranty protection
  • The length of extended warranty coverage

The Capital One Venture X Extended Warranty Coverage

For the Capital One Venture X card, eligible manufacturers’ 3 years or fewer warranties can get 1 additional year of extended warranty coverage.

Although purchases made both inside and outside the U.S. are eligible for the extended warranty, the item must have a valid, original manufacturer’s U.S. repair warranty of 3 years or less, a store-purchased dealer warranty, or an assembler warranty.

Extended warranty reimbursements are limited to no more than the original price of the purchased item (minus shipping and handling fees), up to $10,000 per claim, and up to $50,000 per calendar year.

You must either register your purchase or keep your monthly billing statement reflecting the purchase, an itemized sales receipt, and the original warranty.

If you gift an item to someone else that was purchased with your Capital One Venture X card, they can get coverage, too.

Notable Exclusions From Extended Warranty

There are a series of items that are excluded from extended warranty coverage:

  • Automobiles, aircraft, boats, and other motorized vehicles and their associated motors, equipment, and accessories
  • Real estate and items that are intended to become part of real estate (e.g., garage doors, ceiling fans, etc.)
  • Rented or leased items
  • Computer software
  • Medical equipment
  • Used or pre-owned items (refurbished items will be covered as long as it has a warranty with it and would not be considered used or pre-owned)
  • Losses caused by or resulting from a cyber incident
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Any costs other than those specifically covered under the terms of the original eligible warranty

How To Use the Card’s Extended Warranty

Now that we know what types of purchases are eligible for the extended warranty, let’s go through all the steps needed to follow if an incident occurs.

At a high level, you should make it a habit to register any purchases for extended warranty. It’s not a requirement, but it minimizes the need to compile extra documents and paperwork if you need to file a claim for that item.

To register your item, you can do so online at cardbenefitservices.com (you’ll need to create an online account) or call your Benefits Administrator at 844-288-2140.

You’ll need to either upload or send the sales receipt and warranty information so they can register your item.

Suppose you choose not to register your items. In that case, you’ll need to keep your monthly billing statement showing the purchase, the itemized sales receipt, the item’s original manufacturer’s written U.S. warranty, and any other coverage you may have received or purchased when you bought the item.

To file a claim, visit cardbenefitservices.com or call your Benefits Administrator at 844-288-2140 within 60 days of the product failure and open a case.

You’ll be requested to provide basic preliminary claim information and directed to the appropriate repair facility. After that, the Benefit Administrator will send you a claim form to complete.

Complete the claim form and submit the required documentation within 90 days of product failure:

  • A copy of your monthly billing statement showing the last 4 digits of your credit card account number and the purchase
  • Itemized sales receipt
  • Original manufacturer’s written US. warranty
  • Description of the item and its serial number
  • Original repair estimate or repair bill
  • Any other documentation necessary

After that, the claim will be substantiated and evaluated, and you will be eligible for reimbursements if your item requires repair or replacement.

If your item needs to be repaired, you can go to an authorized repair facility and file a claim for reimbursement.

Reimbursements should occur within 5 business days of approval.
