Bear sprays offer a safe and effective deterrent against bears in the wilds, and they are definitely considered a more desirable alternative to the use of a gun.

Easy to use, effective, and less likely to cause long-term damage to you or the bear, these sprays will have bears and other predators running for the hills, leaving you in peace.

Things To Consider With Bear Spray

As a deterrent to keep you and yours safe while you’re out in the wild, you really need to be sure that the bear spray you take with you is effective. Before you buy, consider the following:

Strength

Most of these bear sprays are made using natural capsicum pepper oils that are not harmful to humans.

For it to be truly effective against bears, it should have a minimum concentration of 0.857% capsaicin to ensure that it can inflame the eyes and the upper respiratory system of the bear enough to make it turn around and leave you in peace.

Spray

When your heart is pounding, and you are suddenly faced with a big bear, you want to know that you need only to touch the trigger of your bear spray for fast and effective protection. Most of our favorite spray brands come with fogger sprays that dispel lots of formula in a very short time span.

Bottom Line: The spray pattern should be in a cloud or a cone pattern in order to cover the greatest area, and it should have a range of 16 feet or more to keep you a safe distance away from the bear.

Type

“Pepper spray” is a broad description of a variety of different personal protection formulations. While you want to encourage the bear to leave you alone, you don’t want to seriously harm it.

Ideally, choose a spray that has been specifically formulated for use on bears or a personal defense product that contains less than 2% CRC (capsaicin and related capsaicinoids).

Size

You should always take bear spray with you — even out of season — for hunting, camping, fishing, and other outdoor adventures in areas where bears are known to live.

Given that a single spray can last for up to 8 seconds or longer, you may find that you get through the contents of your canister pretty quickly if you’re unlucky enough to have more than a single encounter.

With this in mind, take sprays that offer at least 225 grams or 7.9 ounces of net weight, and take not just 1 canister but 2, just to be safe!

Shelf Life

Bear spray has an expiration date. After it expires, its efficacy may be reduced, which could be potentially fatal should a bear make its move.

Most bear sprays promise a shelf life of around 4 years, while some can be used for as long as up to 5 years. As it’s always better to be safe than sorry, check the shelf life on your bear spray before you leave home with it.
