Hawaiian Airlines Overview

Hawaiian Airlines is unique among U.S. carriers, since it serves a niche market and has limited direct competition within its home turf of Hawaii (Aloha Airlines’ bankruptcy ended their operations in 2008).

Features of the Airline

The airline operates narrow-body Boeing 717 aircraft to island-hop among Hawaii’s 4 main islands, and uses wide-body Boeing and Airbus aircraft for mainland U.S. and international operations.

It remains the only U.S. carrier to offer complimentary food and beverages in domestic economy class. They are also not part of an alliance and instead maintain partnerships through codeshares and lateral agreements.

Hawaiian’s most notable partners are American, JetBlue, and Virgin America in the domestic U.S.; ANA for its Japan network; and Virgin Australia in Australia.

HawaiianMiles Mileage Program

Hawaiian Airlines’ mileage program HawaiianMiles remains one of the better mileage programs by return of investment, and the miles earned can also be used to book certain award travel on its partner airlines.

It is one of the few remaining mileage programs that is not revenue based.

Miles can be earned equally on all fare classes in economy class, as well as on partner airlines with a Hawaiian Airlines codeshare flight number, with accelerated earning for first and business class ticket purchases.

Joining HawaiianMiles

To join, simply enroll online for free. You’ll immediately be eligible to earn miles in the future as well as retroactively.

You start off at the basic membership level, with no additional benefits until you make it up the tier. However, they do give you the option to skip that altogether and get some status benefits through a Premier Club membership.

How To Earn Hawaiian Miles

HawaiianMiles can be earned on all Hawaiian Airlines marketed flights, with no blackout fare types.

They can also be earned on partner airlines, though some have restrictions on the amount earned. China Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Australia allow unrestricted mileage accrual when booked through Hawaiian Airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines has 2 credit cards: the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard® and Hawaiian Airlines® Business MasterCard®, both offered through Barclaycard.

You can also transfer miles to Hawaiian Airlines through the American Express Membership Rewards Program, so any card that earns Membership Rewards points will be useful:

How To Redeem Hawaiian Miles

HawaiianMiles can be used to book award travel on any Hawaiian Airlines operated flight, or certain partner airlines with Hawaiian Airlines codeshare flight numbers.

Details on Booking Awards Flights

Unlike many other carriers, HawaiianMiles cannot be used to purchase upgrades. To fly domestic first or international business class, customers must use miles to book an entire award for that specific class.

Miles are redeemed one-way, and therefore can combine award levels including Super Saver, Saver, and Anytime Awards.

Other Ways to Redeem Miles

Miles can be shared with any other HawaiianMiles member free of charge if the member owns a Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite MasterCard®, or with a service fee of $25 and $0.01 per mile shared (with a minimum 2,000 miles transfer) for all other members.
