Can You Get Another Welcome Offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve Card?

It’s important to get comfortable with Chase’s specific rules before applying. For starters, you can only have 1 Chase Sapphire card at a time.

Furthermore, both the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and Chase Sapphire Preferred card are subject to the issuer’s 48-month welcome offer rule. You cannot earn another welcome bonus (from either the Chase Sapphire Reserve card or Chase Sapphire Preferred card) within 48 months.

Finally, it’s unlikely you’ll be approved for either card if you’ve opened 5 or more cards — from any issuer — within the previous 24 months. This unofficial guideline is known as Chase’s 5/24 rule.

Hot Tip:

Has it been more than 48 months since you last received a welcome bonus on either the Chase Sapphire Reserve card or Chase Sapphire Preferred card? You’re in luck. To be eligible for the welcome offer again, you would need to downgrade your card (for example, to a Chase Freedom Unlimited^®) and then reapply for the card.

Final Thoughts

These new welcome offers aren’t the best we’ve ever seen, but Chase seems to offer elevated bonuses much less often nowadays. Getting a head start with the 75,000-point welcome bonus offer can be a great way to earn a healthy stash of points for travel this year, so now’s the time to consider either card.
