Learning how to use credit card points and miles has been a game-changer for me. Travel rewards credit cards are a powerful tool that make luxury travel affordable.
One of the things I love about using credit card points to travel is that you don’t have to spend any more than you were going to in the first place. Travel rewards credit cards aren’t about spending more to get more points — it’s about being strategic with which cards you use for your normal spending to maximize your rewards.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Points
If you’re just getting into points and miles, I recommend starting with Chase Ultimate Rewards points. They are easy to earn, easy to use, and Chase has great transfer partners (including my favorite — Hyatt).
The card I recommend for beginners is the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. It earns a lot of points that are easy to use plus it comes with some nice travel protections — it’s the perfect mix of great perks and a reasonable annual fee.
When you’re ready to step it up a notch, check out the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, my favorite card for travel purchases because it earns 3x points per $1 on all travel expenses and has excellent insurance benefits. This card had a permanent spot in my wallet.
When you’ve got a Sapphire card, you should absolutely add a Freedom card to the mix. This creates a powerhouse combo that offers maximum points earning capabilities.
I earn lots of extra points by maxing out the 5x bonus categories on my Freedom Flex card each quarter. My husband and I each have this card and I also have an old Chase Freedom® card so I really go wild when the bonus category is an easy one to max out, like grocery stores.
Then, I use the Freedom Unlimited card for all of my other expenses. This strategy helps me earn a ton of Ultimate Rewards points which I usually end up transferring to Hyatt for luxury hotel stays.

Recommended Hyatt Credit Cards
Hotel credit cards can be great for the ongoing perks they offer, like free nights or elite status. My favorite hotel brand is Hyatt because, despite recent devaluations, there’s still a ton of good deals to be had!
While I tend to stay at higher-end properties like Grand Hyatt Kauai, Miraval, or Hyatt Centric Key West, I recently got a killer deal at Hyatt Regency Deerfield, a category 1 property right outside of Chicago.
The World of Hyatt card has a permanent spot in my wallet because it offers benefits including a yearly free night certificate that far outweigh the annual fee.

If you’re chasing Hyatt elite status (like I am) another card you may want to consider is the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card. While it doesn’t come with a free night like the personal version does, it earns 5 elite night credits for every $10,000 you spend!
You can have both the personal and business versions so you can take advantage of the perks on both cards.
Hot Tip: You can use the free night certificate that comes with the World of Hyatt card at any category 1-4 Hyatt! I’ve used them to stay at places like Andaz Savannah and Andaz San Diego.

One of the overall best airline perks is the Southwest Companion Pass! I’m currently in my 6th year of having it and it’s all thanks to Southwest credit cards. The Companion Pass has allowed my family to fly extensively on Southwest Airlines without spending a fortune.

One of my dream trips was to go on an African safari and last year it finally happened. We flew from the U.S. to Tanzania, crossed into Kenya during our safari, and then flew home from Nairobi. I used United miles to book Ethiopian Airlines Cloud 9 business class and only had to spend about $75 per person roundtrip in taxes and fees.

One of the great things about the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express card is the first checked bag free benefit. What’s awesome is that this extends to up to 8 additional people on the same reservation. This saved my family and I a bunch of money one year when we all vacationed in Cancun together. I booked everyone under my reservation and we all got a free checked bag!
