Learning how to use credit card points and miles has been a game-changer for me. Travel rewards credit cards are a powerful tool that make luxury travel affordable.
One of the things I love about using credit card points to travel is that you don’t have to spend any more than you were going to in the first place. Travel rewards credit cards aren’t about spending more to get more points — it’s about being strategic with which cards you use for your normal spending to maximize your rewards.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Points
If you’re just getting into points and miles, I recommend starting with Chase Ultimate Rewards points. They are easy to earn, easy to use, and Chase has great transfer partners (including my favorite — Hyatt).
The card I recommend for beginners is the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. It earns a lot of points that are easy to use plus it comes with some nice travel protections — it’s the perfect mix of great perks and a reasonable annual fee.
When you’re ready to step it up a notch, check out the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, my favorite card for travel purchases because it earns 3x points per $1 on all travel expenses and has excellent insurance benefits. This card had a permanent spot in my wallet.
When you’ve got a Sapphire card, you should absolutely add a Freedom card to the mix. This creates a powerhouse combo that offers maximum points earning capabilities.
I earn lots of extra points by maxing out the 5x bonus categories on my Freedom Flex card each quarter. My husband and I each have this card and I also have an old Chase Freedom® card so I really go wild when the bonus category is an easy one to max out, like grocery stores.
Then, I use the Freedom Unlimited card for all of my other expenses. This strategy helps me earn a ton of Ultimate Rewards points which I usually end up transferring to Hyatt for luxury hotel stays.

Recommended Hyatt Credit Cards
Hotel credit cards can be great for the ongoing perks they offer, like free nights or elite status. My favorite hotel brand is Hyatt because, despite recent devaluations, there’s still a ton of good deals to be had!
While I tend to stay at higher-end properties like Grand Hyatt Kauai, Miraval, or Hyatt Centric Key West, I recently got a killer deal at Hyatt Regency Deerfield, a category 1 property right outside of Chicago.
The World of Hyatt card has a permanent spot in my wallet because it offers benefits including a yearly free night certificate that far outweigh the annual fee.
The World of Hyatt card offers a fast track to Hyatt elite status, an annual free night, and up to 9x points per $1 on Hyatt stays.
The World of Hyatt Credit Card makes your Hyatt stays more rewarding and helps you get coveted World of Hyatt elite status faster. This card is a must-have for any traveler who regularly stays at Hyatt hotels, or even for anyone who’s able to take advantage of the card’s annual free night certificate.
When you factor in all the benefits the World of Hyatt card offers, it’s easy to see why it is one of the best co-branded hotel credit cards on the market.
- Up to 9 points total for Hyatt stays – 4 Bonus Points per $1 spent on qualified purchases at Hyatt hotels & up to 5 Base Points per $1 from Hyatt as a World of Hyatt member

- Enjoy complimentary World of Hyatt Discoverist status for as long as your account is open.
- Get 1 free night each year after your Cardmember anniversary at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel or resort

If you’re chasing Hyatt elite status (like I am) another card you may want to consider is the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card. While it doesn’t come with a free night like the personal version does, it earns 5 elite night credits for every $10,000 you spend!
You can have both the personal and business versions so you can take advantage of the perks on both cards.
Hot Tip: You can use the free night certificate that comes with the World of Hyatt card at any category 1-4 Hyatt! I’ve used them to stay at places like Andaz Savannah and Andaz San Diego.
Recommended IHG Credit Cards
I keep the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card in my wallet because it comes with IHG Platinum status, and it earns a ton of points when you’re paying for an IHG stay. The perfect card for IHG fans, offering a free night every year, automatic Platinum Elite status, and your fourth night free on award stays.
If you regularly visit IHG hotels throughout the year, then the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card is probably a perfect card to have in your wallet.

Recommended Southwest Credit Cards
One of the overall best airline perks is the Southwest Companion Pass! I’m currently in my 6th year of having it and it’s all thanks to Southwest credit cards. The Companion Pass has allowed my family to fly extensively on Southwest Airlines without spending a fortune.
The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is the best personal Southwest card because just the Southwest credit and the value of the anniversary points alone are worth more than the annual fee — that doesn’t even take into account any of the card’s other benefits.
If you’re looking for a business card option, the Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card is the one I keep in my wallet because it gets you free Wi-Fi on every Southwest flight you take. This is a huge benefit for anyone that needs to get some work done during a flight.
This card focuses on the Southwest traveler with anniversary points, travel credit, upgrades, and money back on inflight purchases.
The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is the most premium personal Southwest card offering from Chase. When you peel back the curtain, it is easy to see why.
Not only does the card offer multiple bonus categories to help you earn more Southwest Rapid Rewards points, but it is also loaded with benefits that are sure to offer quite a bit of value to Southwest flyers.
Here is a full overview of the card to help you decide if it is a good fit for your wallet.
- 3x points per $1 on Southwest purchases
- 2x points per $1 on local transit and commuting, including rideshare purchases
- 2x points per $1 on internet, cable, phone services, and select streaming purchases
- $149 annual fee
- Does not earn transferable points
- Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
- 7,500 anniversary points each year.
- Earn 3X points on Southwest® purchases.

Recommended Delta Air Lines Credit Cards
One of the great things about the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express card is the first checked bag free benefit. I booked everyone under my reservation and we all got a free checked bag!
