There are plenty of ways to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and one of the best ways to really get the most out of them is by transferring them to travel partners. However, in some cases, it might be a good idea to redeem your earned points in other ways, such as gift cards.

Chase has an interesting promotion where you can save 10% when you redeem your points to buy gift cards from a variety of brands. But is this really the best way to use your points?

Let’s dive into the details and figure out if this offer is worth considering.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Gift Card Sale — Details

For a limited time, you can redeem 10% fewer Chase Ultimate Rewards points for gift cards from 18 brands. You can locate the sale by going into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account and selecting Shopping & Experiences, from which you can then choose the option to redeem points for gift cards.

While Chase provides gift cards for a variety of brands, not all of them are on sale. Only the following brands are available for 10% fewer points:

  • Spafinder
  • Gap Options
  • MGM Resorts
  • PetSmart
  • Google Play
  • Kohl’s
  • Food and Laughs
  • Under Armour
  • Topgolf
  • American Eagle Outfitters
  • Happy Moments
  • Wayfair
  • One4all
  • Zaxsby’s
  • Instacart
  • One4all Weekend Vibes
  • Season Greetings
  • Fandango

For instance, MGM gift cards are available during this sale. Normally, points are worth 1 cent apiece toward gift cards, so a $50 gift card would require 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. During this sale, however, you’ll only need 4,500 points for a $50 gift card.

Gift cards are available in a variety of denominations, and brands marked “On Sale” are eligible for a 10% discount. Keep in mind that gift cards can be delivered in 2 ways: via email or sent in the mail. So, if you want to buy gift cards as Christmas gifts for loved ones, a physical gift card may not arrive in the mail before December 25.

This sale is available to anyone with a credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for a gift card and want to save points, Chase cardholders with an Ultimate Rewards-eligible card can save 10% when they redeem their points for gift cards.

Is It Worth It?

Redeeming 4500 points for a $50 gift card yields a value of 1.11 cents. That’s almost half the value we assign to Chase Ultimate Rewards at 2 cents each.

It might be more beneficial to consider using your points for travel redemptions. Many people find that transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to travel partners such as Hyatt, United, and Southwest at a 1:1 ratio can be a great way to enhance their value.

However, if you have a lot of points, have already booked most of your travel for next year, and intend to purchase some gift cards, this sale might be a worthwhile consideration.

Final Thoughts

If you have a Chase card that accumulates Ultimate Rewards points, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can use 10% fewer points to purchase gift cards from a range of stores.

This is an interesting sale. However, if you have a stash of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you’ll probably want to redeem them for their maximum value, which is much higher than what a gift card redemption would yield.
