Whether you’re just getting started with points and miles or are a seasoned traveler, this in-depth look at Priority Pass answers any questions you may have about the lounge program.

Find out whether Priority Pass is worth it — and if one of the credit cards in your wallet offers Priority Pass as a membership perk!

Let’s take a look at how to get a membership, the benefits of Priority Pass, and every U.S. lounge location, including hours, special policies, guest policies, and amenities.

What Is Priority Pass?

Priority Pass is an independent lounge program that provides members access to over 1,300 airport lounge locations or restaurants in over 600 cities and 140 countries worldwide.

The Club SJC A15. Image Credit: The Club Airport Lounges

With a Priority Pass membership, you can utilize each participating lounge regardless of the airline you’re flying, the class of your ticket, or your membership or lack thereof in any frequent flyer program.

The fee you’ll pay will depend on the membership you choose. But luckily, there are a number of credit cards that offer complimentary Priority Pass membership, which we’ll discuss more in detail below.

Priority Pass Benefits

General Lounge Amenities

With a Priority Pass membership, you’ll receive benefits such as:

  • Complimentary refreshments, including alcohol in most lounges
  • Space to work or relax in a comfortable place
  • Free Wi-Fi in most lounges
  • Comfortable seats and quiet spaces
  • The latest magazines and newspapers
  • Power sockets to give your devices a boost
  • Conference rooms, showers, beds, and spa facilities in select lounges

If a lounge has any special amenities, we have noted them below.

Restaurants, Be Relax Spas, and Minute Suites

Additionally, Priority Pass comes with access to a handful of restaurants, Be Relax Spas, and Minute Suite locations in the U.S. and abroad. This gives members yet another way to utilize their membership, especially at locations that may not offer a traditional lounge.

When it comes to Priority Pass-designated restaurants, cardholders will usually receive $28 off the final bill. And restaurants will usually allow 1 guest per cardholder and will issue $56 off the final bill ($28 per person).

At eligible Be Relax Spa locations, Priority Pass members are entitled to select one of a variety of massage and aromatherapy services.

At the Minute Suite locations, Priority Pass members receive 1 hour of access for free, with the option to rent additional hours at a discounted rate of $28 to $34. Showers are also available for an extra cost.

Hot Tip: Priority Pass memberships from U.S.-issued American Express cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, no longer include Priority Pass restaurant access, referred to as “non-lounge airport experiences.”

Lounge Access

To access a Priority Pass lounge, members must present membership identification.

Most lounges now accept a digital membership card that can be accessed via the Priority Pass app. However, be sure to check the requirements of the specific lounge you wish to visit before arriving. In some cases, the lounge will require a physical membership card.

Guest Policies

The number of guests allowed varies per lounge, is often subject to space and capacity constraints, and depends on the type of membership you have.

If, for example, you obtained a Priority Pass membership directly from Priority Pass, the guest access price is $35 per guest. This guest fee will be charged directly to your nominated payment card.

Some of the more popular travel rewards credit cards, like the Amex Platinum card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, give you complimentary access for 2 guests.

Priority Pass App

The Priority Pass app is available for Apple and Android users to download on their smartphones. This app is free and includes access to your digital membership card. Additionally, the app provides users the ability to search for lounges, rate lounges, and access their visit history. Specific to each lounge, users can find lounge images, hours, and amenities offered.

Other Benefits

Family/Partner Pass: Priority Pass doesn’t advertise it boldly, but they do offer a Partner Standard Membership at half price. Members should contact the Membership Services team for more information.

Referral Bonuses: Through a special referral link, Priority Pass members can refer friends and receive free guest visits in return. Plus, your friends get 10% off their membership as a perk. There is no limit to the number of friends you can refer.

How To Get Priority Pass Membership

There are 2 ways to get a Priority Pass membership, either by purchasing a membership directly or using one of the best credit cards with Priority Pass access as a card benefit.

Hot Tip: Priority Pass Select is the membership plan you’re given when you receive your membership through a U.S. financial institution such as your bank account or a credit card.

Credit Card Benefit

The best way to acquire membership is to have a credit card that offers Priority Pass as a cardmember benefit.

The following credit cards are our favorites that include Priority Pass Select as a cardholder benefit, and for each card below you can bring up to 2 guests in with you, complimentary.

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Enrollment Is Required

If you receive Priority Pass membership through one of the above credit cards, you’re required to officially enroll to utilize your benefits. You cannot simply show your credit card and expect entry. Refer to your membership guide or contact your credit card’s customer service staff for help with enrollment.

If you don’t have a credit card that includes Priority Pass as a member benefit, you can sign up for a membership plan on the Priority Pass website. The pricing varies by country and desired plan benefits.

Priority Pass offers 3 levels of membership. Image Credit: Priority Pass

There are 3 membership tiers:

  • The Standard plan has a $99 annual fee. Customers must also pay an additional $35 each time they visit a lounge.
  • The Standard Plus plan has a $329 annual fee and customers receive 10 “free” visits. Each additional visit thereafter is $35.
  • The Prestige plan has a $469 annual fee and customers receive all visits “free.”

On all plans, each guest will cost $35 and the number of guests is subject to each specific lounge’s policy.

Hot Tip: Priority Pass often offers discounts on its memberships. For example, at the time of writing, the Standard plan is offered at 50% off and the Standard Plus plan at 35% off.

Not Sure Which Plan Is Right for You?

Check out this handy table based on how many times you might visit a Priority Pass Lounge each year:

StandardStandard PlusPrestigeSelect (Credit Card Benefit)
1 visit$134$329
$469
FREE
(with your annual credit card membership fee)
5 visits$274$329
10 visits$449$329
15 visits$624$504
20 visits$799$679

If you only plan to visit a Priority Pass lounge 5 times in a year, for example, the Standard plan should suffice. But any number of visits past 5 will end up costing you more than if you had purchased the Standard Plus plan to begin with. And the Prestige Plan is only your best bet if you plan to visit any of the lounges more than 14 times in 1 year.

Why not get a credit card that already includes Priority Pass Select as well as a multitude of other cost-saving benefits, rewards, and perks? A Priority Pass Select membership means FREE access to thousands of lounges worldwide via a credit card you may already have in your wallet.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering a Priority Pass membership and you travel often, it’s a lot more lucrative to sign up for one of the credit cards that offer a Priority Pass membership than signing up directly for a membership. Each of these credit cards provides additional cost-saving benefits to frequent flyers, so the value will outweigh signing up for a direct membership alone.

Priority Pass is consistently expanding its lounge options, meaning you’ll have a decent choice for lounge access at most places you fly.

In actual use, this has little benefit. They advertise all these lounges, but when you go to them you are told they are not accepting PP customers due to ‘capacity constraints’. However, those constraints don’t exist if you buy a pass directly from the lounge or have another membership. PP customers are the lowest tier and are often turned away even during hours advertised as available. Buyer Beware!

@AP, Although what you are saying is sometimes the case, it is usually in fairly crowded lounges located within the US. Alaska Air Lounges come to mind and they are actually leaving the program in Seattle because they weren’t able to accommodate PP guests with any regularity.

I have never had an issue getting in to a foreign PP lounge and have used them in 30+ countries over the past several years. In addition, the restaurants do not limit PP access. If they have tables available, you can sit and eat.

It can be frustrating when you are expecting a lounge and can’t get in, but I would urge you to keep trying, especially when traveling internationally. Some of the foreign PP lounges can be quite nice.

As of April 19, The Club at PHX will no longer accept PP.

Hey Randy – thanks for the heads up! We try to do an update on this piece 1-2 times a month and check priority pass’s official list of inclusions for accuracy! We’ll be updating when it’s no longer available! 🙂

Thanks for sharing this article. This is a very helpful site. I think that this will definitely help me be able to get a membership.

Thank you for this information, but I find this article confusing. It states that there seem to be no differences between the select and the standard plan, but then later states that with the standard plan visits are $32, but then later again states that it’s good to have select because visits are free. And select is not shown in the picture of the three plans to buy. It appears select is a card benefit only. I wish that the two would have just been kept separate from one another–maybe in two different articles, or just clearly delineated…

Erin Miller

June 22, 2019

Hi Kristen… I can see how you’re confused. We’re going to remove the sentence where we state we can see no advertised difference, as you’re correct, the standard plans require a sign-up outside of receiving the membership through a financial institution.

Select isn’t shown in the photo of the memberships you can buy, because you can’t buy it. We state in the article: “Priority Pass Select is the membership plan/card you’re given when you receive your membership through a U.S. financial institution (e.g. your bank account or a credit card).”

The rest of the information should be accurate here. Hope this helps!

I’m still trying to find a Priority pass lounge that is available to me. My recent and future round trip flights include… PHX-SFO,..ORD-PHX,…PHX-MSY,…PHX-MKE. Come on,…..nothing in Phoenix? Even at an airport with a lounge location, it can be in another terminal….. ( ORD,…SFO )

I’ll keep looking…..

July 01, 2019

Hi Gary,

Yes, unfortunately the only airport in your list that accepts priority pass is O’Hare, at the Air France and Swissport lounges in Terminal 5.

BobG

July 12, 2019

Since you acknowledge that Priority Pass will stop providing access to its restaurant locations, you should remove those locations from your list, or at least note that they will be unavailable starting August 1. This decision was enough to make me drop my AMEX platinum Card which includes Priority Pass as a benefit.

Christine Krzyszton

July 15, 2019

Hi BobG. Priority Pass access to lounge alternative restaurants is still currently available beyond August 1st, just not for Priority Pass Select Membership that comes with American Express issued cards.

June 26, 2022

Is this just for Priority Pass membership with Amex Platinum? How about Priority Pass from Chase Sapphire? Does it still include Priority Pass restaurants (as of today June 2022)? TIA

Christine Krzyszton

June 26, 2022

Hi Max. Priority Pass Select Memberships that come with Chase-issued credit cards still include benefits at participating restaurant locations and Minute Suites.

June 26, 2022

Got it – thx Christine! Same question as my Amex regarding bringing guests to the lounge… do multiple Priority Pass cards allow me to bring more guests to a Priority Pass lounge? TIA

Christine Krzyszton

June 27, 2022

Unfortunately you can only use one Priority Pass card per visit, according to Priority Pass Conditions of Use: “If Customer has multiple Programme memberships, Customer is responsible for presenting the correct Means of Access to the Lounge or Merchant staff for admittance, and may only use one such Programme membership per visit.” Thanks for reading and for your questions, Max.

I am finding more and more restrictions on lounge access. I just accessed the lounge in SFO this morning and was initially told that they do not accept arrivals, but she did let me in as an exception because the lounge was empty. After approx. an hour, I was approached in the lounge and told that there was a 1 hour maximum stay on arrivals. I’ve been in this lounge many times, but never heard that. The lounge was empty at that time also, so it wasn’t an issue of overcrowding. Just a heads up.

Katie Seemann

September 09, 2019

Hi Jenn,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Not allowing access for arrivals or limiting your time if you’re coming in on an arriving flight (without a connection) isn’t uncommon. It’s too bad they didn’t let you stay though since the lounge was empty.

PP with Sapphire: $500 annual fee + $100 for additional card – Lounge accepts 2 guests free.
PP now also available through the Venture X card – only $350ish cheaper than Sapphire and Additional cards are free – Same benefits of 2 free guests.
If you have more than 3-4 , hopping terminals and additional security at each terminal may be worth it to spend time between flights
Washington DC- Turkish is the best Lounge for food and drink. Lufthansa is dry, AF is so so.
Boston – Air France Lounge is Good
PIT/CIN/ATL – The Club is fine / Basic free alcohol, limited food since Pandemic, good seating.
Mini Suites are a waste with only 3 hrs free.
Lounges in Zurich, Frankfurt = Primeclass Lounges are better than others
DOHA, Dubai, Mumbai, Bangkok,

Sad that domestic lounge access is impossible. ORD Swissport has to be removed. G-map reviews are horrible. But my (authorized Cap1VentX user) kids are having a great time using PP lounges internationally. No issues getting in, great food and spaces, endless variety.

With PP Select, are you able to use your pass to gain entry to multiple lounges in the same day? For instance with routes with layovers – 1st lounge waiting for first flight, 2nd lounge waiting for connecting flight. Or can you use the restaurant credit and still gain entrance to a lounge? Thank you!

May 09, 2023

Hey Jane, yes, you can use your membership multiple times per day at the same airport and others.

I was recently rejected at 3 different airports on my latest August-September 2023 trip, and most importantly my home base airport which was San Francisco Int’l airport. At both lounges there at SFO, the China Airlines and KLM AirFrance lounges rejected me informing me they are not taking ANY Priority Pass customers but are still taking other airline passengers. I paid for my Priority Pass membership. I am completely disappointed that customer service refused to assist me and also having some visits left they didn’t even consider extending my 1 year membership for the lounge rejections I experienced.

I was also rejected at Bangkok airport due to crowded and full lounges.

Of course I will not be renewing my paid membership with Priority Pass and don’t recommend it.

Getting ready for a trip from Atlanta-Montreal-Dublin then Edinburgh-Hamburg-Atlanta. I have the Amex Platinum and your Priority Pass. I will be traveling with my wife and her 83 year old mother. Where and what lounges can I use at these locations, what do I need to present, and how much will it cost me? Thanks in advance.

Jarrod West

September 18, 2023

Hi Gregory,

You can view all eligible lounges by typing the airport in on this page at the American Express website. All you should need to present is your card, your ID, and your boarding passes.
