If you haven’t been watching airline news recently, you may have missed out on the fact that Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), previously a member of Star Alliance, has now jumped ship and moved over to SkyTeam. While this is a loss for Star Alliance aficionados, it does have 1 bright side: You can now redeem your Delta SkyMiles on select SAS routes.

Let’s take a look at what’s available.

Delta Begins Offering Award Redemptions For SAS

As first reported by AwardWallet, Delta is now offering the option to use your SkyMiles for SAS flights — but not all flights are available yet. For the most part, it looks like intra-Europe flights are bookable:

Interestingly, it looks like you’ll be paying a little bit more for SAS flights than you would for other SkyTeam partners such as KLM, at least for economy bookings. While the pricing is still reasonable, why would you opt to pay more for what is arguably a very similar experience?

Again, not all SAS routes are available yet. For example, searches from Europe over to Japan and Thailand, both of which are available in cash, don’t show award availability on Delta’s site.

Plus, Delta’s search feature doesn’t allow you to sort by airline, which can be frustrating when trying to find SAS flights among other available options.

In this example, we tried finding a one-way flight from Washington D.C. (IAD) to Copenhagen (CPH), seeing numers results for just 45,000 SkyMiles.

However, toggling the non-stop filter is the only way to figure out if there are SAS flights, as the airline operates a direct route from Washington D.C. In this case, not a single date showed SAS award availability.

Hot Tip:

Considering flying with SAS? We’ve got a full guide to Scandinavian Airlines’ direct routes from the U.S., including plane types and seat options.

Final Thoughts

It’s good news that Delta is adding access to some SAS flights for award bookings. So far, results appear to be reasonably priced and on par with what you’d find among other SkyTeam partners like KLM and Air France. While we don’t yet have access to the full route network, hopefully, that will be added in the coming weeks.

We’re also looking forward to seeing Flying Blue integrate SAS awards — and we’re especially keen to see how Virgin Atlantic, another SkyTeam partner, prices SAS award flights.
