If you haven’t been watching airline news recently, you may have missed out on the fact that Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), previously a member of Star Alliance, has now jumped ship and moved over to SkyTeam.

While this is a loss for Star Alliance aficionados, it does have 1 bright side: You can now redeem your Delta SkyMiles on select SAS routes. This originally rolled out only with short-haul flights, but SAS’ long-haul flights are now available using Delta miles.

Let’s take a look at what’s available.

Delta Begins Offering Award Redemptions For SAS

As first reported by AwardWallet, Delta recently provided the ability to use your SkyMiles for SAS flights — but not all flights at first. For the most part, it started with intra-Europe flights:

Interestingly, it looks like you’ll be paying a little bit more for SAS flights than you would for other SkyTeam partners such as KLM, at least for economy bookings. While the pricing is still reasonable, why would you opt to pay more for what is arguably a very similar experience?

Delta Now Offers Long-Haul SAS Flight Awards

Again, not all SAS routes were available at first. For example, searches from Europe over to Japan and Thailand, both of which were available in cash, didn’t show award availability until now.

Plus, Delta’s search feature doesn’t allow you to sort by airline, which can be frustrating when trying to find SAS flights among other available options.

Pricing is in line with other uses of Delta SkyMiles, meaning the best value usually includes flights that don’t touch the U.S. You’ll pay 50,000 SkyMiles for an SAS economy award between Copenhagen and Bangkok, flying for over 11 hours. However, you’ll pay more than that for a shorter flight to Atlanta (ATL):

Paying 135,000 miles per person in premium economy or 375,000 miles in business class is tough to swallow.

Final Thoughts

It’s good news that Delta is adding access to additional SAS flights for award bookings. Results mirror other redemptions of SkyMiles (meaning some prices are incredibly high), and we’re seeing more flights now than we did a few weeks ago.
