Italian flag carrier ITA Airways flies to Rome from 7 U.S. airports and, for a limited time, is offering a promotion to earn double the points in its Volare loyalty program. This could be interesting for U.S. flyers, considering that ITA Airways just joined the Lufthansa Group and will join Star Alliance next year, meaning Volare points will be redeemable on a vast universe of airlines—likely including United.

Let’s see how this deal works.

Earn 2x Points on ITA Airways Until June 30

ITA Airways has launched a promotion that lets you earn double Volare points on flights between the U.S. and Rome.

The promotion is valid on any number of one-way or round-trip flights sold and operated by ITA Airways, provided the ticket is purchased between April 7 and April 30, 2025, and the itinerary is flown between May 4 and June 30, 2025.

Double points will only be credited for flights to Rome (FCO) originating from Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington-Dulles (IAD).

If you have an itinerary on ITA Airways connecting via Rome to another destination, double points will be awarded only for the flight to Rome. For example, if you fly from New York (JFK) to Palermo (PMO) in Sicily with a connection in Rome, you will get double points only for the New York to Rome leg.

The promotion is only available for flights from the U.S.; according to the terms published on the ITA website, it does not apply to flights from Italy to the U.S. ITA also notes that points will be credited within 60 days after the flight’s completion date, and extra points do not count for reaching status in the Volare program. Registration is not necessary.

Note that to earn the double Volare points, you should check in using your Volare frequent flyer number. The promotion won’t be applied if you fly using your account with a partner airline to earn miles in that airline’s loyalty program.

Is It Worth It?

With the recent addition of ITA Airways to the Lufthansa Group, Volare points are becoming a more appealing loyalty currency.

Lufthansa and its group partners Swiss, Brussels Airlines, and Austrian all use Miles & More as their currency. As ITA integrates more closely into the German-led group, Volare points will likely be converted to Miles & More. Those miles are especially valuable for booking Lufthansa’s coveted first class.

Therefore, if you’re planning a vacation to Rome and haven’t booked yet, this ITA double Volare points promotion for travel through June 30, 2025, may make sense if you’re paying cash and the airfare is reasonable.

Hot Tip:

If you are looking to collect Miles & More instead of Volare points, you can already do so on ITA flights.

Final Thoughts

This double-points promotion from ITA Airways may seem a bit niche for U.S. flyers, but its Volare points may be worth a second look. With the entrance of ITA into the Lufthansa Group and soon into Star Alliance with future partner United, Volare points are becoming a more useful loyalty currency than before Lufthansa scooped up the storied heir to Alitalia.
