Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

As a “thank you” to riders, NJ transit is offering free rides across its network this week — no matter which form of transportation you’re taking in New Jersey.

This fare holiday runs from August 26 to September 2, 2024. Here’s what travelers need to know.

Free NJ Transit Rides This Week

New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, announced a transit fare holiday for all customers, effective from August 26 to September 2, 2024. During this time, customers aren’t required to purchase or present tickets. Starting on September 3, 2024, normal ticket policies and prices will resume.

This fare holiday applies to all NJ Transit modes of transportation, so you can catch a free bus to work or even a free train ride to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

For customers who already purchased a monthly pass for August, you’ll automatically receive a 25% discount on your September pass when purchasing through the NJ Transit mobile app, at a ticket vending machine, or at a ticket window.

Bottom Line:

You don’t need to claim or sign up for a free ride, and there’s no special “free ride ticket.” Just get on the bus or train and go where you want to go. It’s that easy!

Where Does NJ Transit Run?

NJ Transit operates throughout New Jersey, offering bus services in numerous locations. The state’s transit provider also operates 2 light rail networks: Newark Light Rail and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail that covers areas like Jersey City and Hoboken.

NJ Transit also operates several train lines, and maps for those are available here. Many of these converge around Newark, Seacaucus, Hoboken, or onward into Manhattan in New York City. It’s worth noting that 2 of these train lines (the North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor) stop at Newark Liberty International Airport, so the fare holiday this week could mean free rides to the airport.

Typical Cost of NJ Transit Fares

Typically, a bus ride starts at $1.80 but can go as high as $55.75 for long distances. When riding a light rail with NJ Transit, you’ll pay between $1.80 and $2.55, based on route and distance. Train tickets can be as cheap as $1.70 or as much as $23.85, based on distance traveled.

Fare details and fare zones (as well as a fare calculator) can be found on the NJ Transit fares page.

Final Thoughts

This week, you can get free bus, light rail, and train rides with NJ Transit, thanks to a fare holiday. You don’t need to claim a free ticket or show anything special. Just get on your preferred mode of transportation and enjoy a free ride in The Garden State this week.
