This week’s hotel news brought a mix of notable openings, brand expansions, and loyalty changes.

Highlights include a design-focused retreat on Crete’s eastern coast, 3 independent luxury hotels joining IHG, and the first urban Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which is planned for Shanghai.

On the loyalty front, Hilton made its Best Rate Guarantee considerably less generous, while IHG introduced a new booking option for members in Taiwan.

Here’s what you may have missed from around the hotel industry this week.

Hotel Openings

EÉSO by NEMA — Crete

NEMA Design Hotel & Spa, an SLH Hotel, has added EÉSO by NEMA, luxury villas (The Atrium, The Sanctum, The Pavilion, and The Penthouse) focused on intimacy and design, along with the NÁ LE MA dining experience, which doesn’t use set menus.

The hotel’s restaurants also emphasize local ingredients, including produce and olive oil sourced from the family’s own estate.

Rates start at $761 per night, and bookings are available through Hilton Honors’ partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

The Hari Hotels Join IHG’s Vignette Collection — Hong Kong, Singapore, U.K.

IHG has brought 3 Hari properties into its Vignette Collection: The Hari London, The Hari Hong Kong, and the newly built The Hari Singapore. Vignette is IHG’s soft brand for independent luxury properties.

The Singapore hotel marks the collection’s first property in Southeast Asia. Despite joining IHG, all 3 hotels will continue operating under their existing designs and management.

IHG One Rewards members can now earn points on paid stays at the 3 properties. Award availability should appear soon.

Upcoming Hotels

Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai (China) — 2030

Marriott is bringing the Ritz-Carlton Reserve brand to an entirely new setting with the announcement of The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai, its first urban Reserve property.

Until now, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio has focused on secluded resort destinations, including Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico and Zadún Los Cabos

The Shanghai property will rise along Suzhou Creek in Puxi and is planned to include 116 guest rooms plus 40 branded residences. The project targets a 2030 opening.

The Ritz-Carlton Phnom Penh (Cambodia) — 2032

Marriott has also signed a deal for The Ritz-Carlton Phnom Penh, giving the brand its first presence in Cambodia.

The 260-room hotel will be part of a mixed-use development on the Chroy Changvar peninsula. Plans call for river views and a rooftop pool, but guests will have a long wait ahead, with the opening currently scheduled for 2032.

IHG Signs 5 New Hotels in Taiwan

IHG has reached an agreement with Taiwan Star Enterprise Co. covering 5 new hotels, a deal that will effectively double the company’s current pipeline in Taiwan.

The projects include Kimpton and Vignette Collection hotels in Taipei and Taichung. Most are expected to welcome guests between 2027 and 2029.

Hotel Industry News

Hilton’s Best Rate Guarantee Gets Weaker

Hilton has significantly reduced the value of its Best Rate Guarantee. Beginning August 20, 2026, successful claims now receive a 10% discount instead of the previous 25% reduction. Hilton has also lowered the maximum covered stay from 5 nights to 3.

On top of that, every claim now requires a verification form.

That’s a substantial downgrade for anyone who likes to compare rates after finding a Hilton property. The Best Rate Guarantee was already becoming less compelling, and these changes make it even more important to find the lowest eligible rate before completing a booking — rather than relying on the claims after the fact.

Final Thoughts

There was a lot packed into this week’s hotel news, from 3 independent luxury hotels joining IHG to Marriott expanding the Ritz-Carlton brand into Cambodia.

The biggest development may be Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai. If Marriott successfully brings the Reserve concept to an urban setting, it could greatly expand this brand’s growth possibilities.

Meanwhile, Hilton’s Best Rate Guarantee is considerably less attractive, making it another loyalty benefit worth checking before booking.
