If you’ve been eyeing a stay at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto, you’ll want to plan sooner rather than later.

The hotel is set to officially close on May 9, 2027, with plans to demolish the building shortly after. That gives you a limited window to experience one of Hyatt’s most well-regarded properties in Kyoto before it disappears for good.

Here’s what to know about the Hyatt Regency Kyoto closure — plus where to stay instead.

Longtime Hyatt Staple in Kyoto Will Soon Be Gone

The Hyatt Regency Kyoto isn’t just another Regency — it’s long been one of the brand’s standout properties. When it opened in 2006, it marked Hyatt’s debut in the city and remained the only Hyatt in Kyoto for over a decade until newer brands like Park Hyatt and Hyatt Place arrived.

Set in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, the hotel blends modern design with traditional Japanese elements, from serene garden spaces to warm wood interiors. It’s not over-the-top luxury — but it’s the kind of place that feels calm, intentional, and very, well, Kyoto.

When I stayed here many years ago, the location really stood out — close to Kyoto’s top temples and cultural sites, but just far enough from the crowds to actually unwind at the end of the day.

Well, now unfortunately, the hotel will close on May 9, 2027, and be demolished shortly after — so if you’ve been eyeing a stay here, the clock is officially ticking. The site is expected to be redeveloped into a new hotel, though it’s still unclear whether Hyatt will return or which brand it could fall under — and any reopening likely isn’t expected until around 2029 or 2030.

If you still want to stick with Hyatt in Kyoto, you do have a couple of options. The Hyatt Place Kyoto is your best bet for a solid, high-value stay using points, with a convenient location and more reasonable award pricing. On the other end, the Park Hyatt Kyoto is one of the most aspirational Hyatt properties in the world — but you need flexibility (and luck) to actually find award availability.

Hot Tip:

If you’re flying to Japan and Kyoto is part of your itinerary, consider locking in a stay at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto now — availability could get tighter as the 2027 closure date gets closer.

Final Thoughts

World of Hyatt enthusiasts will have 1 fewer hotel to pick from in Kyoto after May 2027. The Hyatt Regency Kyoto has long been a sweet spot, a reliable, well-located property that delivers solid value without the Park Hyatt-level price tag.

If you’ve been considering a stay, this is very much a book-it-while-you-still-can moment, because once it closes in May 2027, Hyatt’s footprint in Kyoto will look a lot different.
