LATAM is the latest airline to confirm an order of Airbus A321XLRs.

The narrow-body, single-aisle jets are scheduled to fly passengers for the first time in 2027. And the business suites on this plane look excellent.

Here are the details of the new aircraft, which is exciting not only for South Americans but also for U.S.-based travelers headed south to Latin America.

LATAM’s New Airbus A321XLR

LATAM will be the first airline in Latin America to introduce narrow-body aircraft with lie-flat seats with privacy doors in a 1-1 configuration.

The first of the 13-strong order is expected to be delivered sometime in 2027. The jets will comprise a total of 170 seats split between 3 cabins: business class, premium economy, and economy.

Similar to the models that American, JetBlue, and United already fly or have on order, all seats in business class will have direct aisle access and privacy doors. The renderings released by LATAM show a sleek cabin of 12 seats in just 6 rows.

Images and details of the rest of the aircraft are yet to be released. However, during a conversation with Simple Flying a few months ago, Paulo Miranda, vice president of customers at LATAM, confirmed the plane’s economy cabin will be redefined to accommodate longer flying.

We can also expect the Wi-Fi-equipped jets to feature IFE screens at every seat as well as Bluetooth connectivity.

The only similar aircraft currently based in South America is the Copa Airlines Boeing 737 fleet. Some of these aircraft feature lie-flat seats, though in a 2-2 configuration and without privacy doors.

Bottom Line:

As the largest airline in South America, LATAM likes to be known as the first in the region when it comes to innovation. In addition to the upcoming Airbus A321XLRs, the airline was recently the first South American airline to fly business class seats with privacy doors.

How LATAM’s A321XLR Will Change Travel to and From South America

European Airlines like Spain’s Iberia and TAP Air Portugal have already started using their Airbus A321XLRs to operate niche routes between the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil. While LATAM has plans to follow in a similar fashion, the first destination for its new A321XLRs will likely be the U.S.

More specifically, the first deliveries will be based at Lima Jorge Chavez International (LIM) in Peru, from which the jet can reach each of the 4 U.S. destinations LATAM serves from the airport.

Possible LATAM A321XLR routes to the US from Lima

The 4,700-nautical-mile (8,700-kilometer) range of the Airbus A321XLR means it unfortunately won’t be able to connect LATAM’s main hubs in Santiago, Chile (SCL), and São Paulo (GRU) with Europe and most cities in the U.S. A possibility would be Santiago to Miami, but this is a key route for LATAM on which it sends its Dreamliners fitted with its brand-new business class suites — and typically fills the seats of this much larger aircraft.

Rather, LATAM plans to use the cities of Brasilía (BSB) and Fortaleza (FOR) in Brazil to optimize the new aircraft. From Brasilia, the Airbus A321XLR will have no issues reaching many cities in the U.S. Fortaleza’s location on Brazil’s north coast makes it the perfect base for LATAM to add niche routes to new European destinations.

While new Latin American connections to the U.S. and Europe are great, I hope LATAM also decides to deploy these aircraft on routes within South America. For example, key routes connecting hub cities like Buenos Aires (EZE), Lima, Santiago, and São Paulo are often operated by Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft that offer a far inferior business-class product.

Final Thoughts

The word “exciting” gets tossed about a lot in airline news. However, LATAM’s Airbus A321XLR is truly deserving of the adjective. While we await more details on launch dates and confirmed routes, rest assured that, based on what we know so far, the plane will be a true game-changer for travelers to South America from the U.S. and Europe.

It would also be fantastic if LATAM decides to operate this aircraft on routes within South America. It would greatly improve the passenger experience for residents of South American countries and for those traveling around the continent.
