Traveling with children is a memorable and special experience.

It can also be stressful and overwhelming. While your family vacation is greatly affected by flight delays, toddler meltdowns, or teenage angst, one of the best ways to enjoy traveling with little ones (rather than the exhaustion) is by choosing the right destination.

There are no guarantees you won’t face flight cancellations or mood swings, but traveling to kid-friendly destinations makes everything easier. After visiting more than 60 countries (12 of them with my 5-year-old), here are the most ideal European destinations for your next family vacation.

1. Spain

You might think I’m biased after living in Spain for nearly 2 decades, but for the first 15 years, I was child-free, wondering why Spanish children were always running around restaurants and why babies were in bars. Didn’t anyone here have a bedtime?

Now that I’m a mom, I love that it’s socially acceptable to bring my kid everywhere in Spain. The Spanish treat children as regular humans, albeit smaller ones. Most families, especially in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, or Valencia, live in apartments, so meeting up at bars rather than having friends over in small spaces is the norm — including for children.

My son and I at Madrid’s Retiro Park on a sunny autumn day.

Many bars are located near playgrounds, so parents can relax with a drink while the kids play. The fact that most of the country sees decent weather year-round helps. You’ll also find cafes and restaurants with small play areas, and it’s completely normal to see a baby napping in a stroller while parents linger over dinner. Most locals won’t blink an eye if your toddler is having a tantrum, whether that’s in a restaurant or on the street.

Spain’s late-night culture took some getting used to, but now I love it. My son still has a regular bedtime, but during long summer nights — when it doesn’t get dark until 10 p.m. — you’ll find families out enjoying the night together.

If you love food and culture, visit Madrid, where you can take child-friendly tours of the Prado Museum and get your little ones hooked on tapas. It’s one of the most family-friendly capital cities in Europe, easy to navigate, and super affordable. For beach time, head to destinations like Alicante or Malaga, where kids can spend all day in the sand and sea. And if you want to introduce your kids to music and dance, see a live flamenco show in a cave in Granada’s Sacromonte neighborhood.

Hot Tip:

It can get very hot in Spain during the midday hours, especially in the summer. Take the kids for a siesta or find an air-conditioned spot to beat the heat. In smaller towns, supermarkets and pharmacies may close at this time of day, so make sure to get any essentials, such as formula, drinks, diapers, or snacks, in the morning or the evening.

2. Italy

Italy might be one of the easiest countries to visit with kids. Maybe I’m biased — my 5-year-old’s name is Alessandro, and he loves to say “ciao” to everyone he meets — but everywhere we’ve gone, from Sicily to Florence, locals have welcomed him with open arms. Just like Spain, Italy has a strong family culture, and most squares are safe for kids to run around in while you sip on an Aperol spritz.

Italy is heaven for picky eaters, as you can usually find pasta and pizza on every corner, though locals may look slightly appalled if you order butter or plain pasta. No matter where you are in the country, you can also usually find a gelato shop, too. The little ones will also love breakfast, which usually consists of a sugary pastry or croissant with chocolate milk (and coffee for the grown-ups).

Some of the best destinations for children include the lakes, such as Lake Iseo or Lake Garda, which are easily accessible by train from Milan. Here, kids can swim in safe, shallow water, run through green pastures, and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.

Alessandro and I admire cows at our agriturismo near Bologna, Italy.

Agriturismos are also excellent spots for families: farm stays, sort of like B&Bs, where the food is usually sourced from the farm or the local area. Think fruit and jam, olive oil, vegetables, wine, and even meats. Staying at these is a great way for kids to learn some Italian, safely run around in wide-open spaces, and get to know more about the country’s beloved gastronomy and culture. They often offer cooking or tasting experiences for kids, as well.

Hot Tip:

Many of Italy’s streets are cobblestone, so make sure that your kid has proper walking shoes or that you have a sturdy stroller. If you book an Airbnb or home rental, check whether it has an elevator and air conditioning, if those things are important to you.

3. Portugal

While Lisbon’s cobblestone hills can be intense for strollers, Portugal is extremely child-friendly, starting with the airport experience. Many of the country’s airports, such as Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in Porto, offer family lines and free strollers. Some train stations and tourist attractions, such as castles and museums, also have dedicated family lines.

The Algarve is one of the best places in Portugal for families. While some of Portugal’s beaches are famous for massive swells, the Algarve’s waters are typically calmer and better for small children. Nearby, you find plenty of attractions beyond the beach, such as zoos, caves, and waterparks.

Many hotels across Portugal welcome children, but the Martinhal Resorts, especially the Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort, are famously kid-friendly. This particular hotel offers a daycare for babies, tennis and soccer academies, kids and teen clubs, and tons of baby gear (upon request).

Hot Tip:

Large or double strollers may not fit well on some of Portugal’s narrow streets. Consider a travel stroller (I loved my Stokke Babyzen Yoyo) — it may feel bumpy on cobblestones, but it will fit on the sidewalk. And don’t forget your baby carrier on this trip. My favorite for travel is the Beco Gemini Cool Mesh Carrier, which keeps you cool during a sweaty European summer. It’s also super versatile.

4. Montenegro

My 5-year-old was the star of the show last summer during our family trip to Montenegro. Everywhere we went, pretty much everyone wanted to chat with him, give him a little toy or piece of candy, or simply ask for a high five.

The Bay of Kotor is one of the top spots for children. The Adriatic Sea was perfect in August: clear, shallow, and calm, so my son spent hours playing and floating in it. He even commented that he loved the pebbly beach, because he didn’t get “all sandy.”

And if you ask my son the best part of the vacation? The 5-minute-long car ferry we took to get there. During the entire trip (and for months afterward), he was endlessly entertained at restaurants, putting 5 small Hot Wheels cars on a napkin (the ferry) and moving it around the table.

Alessandro Montenegro

Staying in Herceg Novi is super family-friendly, as it’s extremely close to the Croatian border, making for a shorter drive. We had an incredible stay at the Iberostar Herceg Novi, which was full of other families. Plus, the resort is all-inclusive, which isn’t as common in Europe but can be nice for families. There was also a water toys area, where my son discovered a floatie and a pirate ship toy.

Hot Tip:

Montenegro isn’t part of the European Union. What should be a 1-hour car journey across the land border from Croatia turns into 3, so make sure you have snacks, drinks, and games in the car if you plan to drive.

5. Greek Islands

There are dozens of family-friendly Greek Islands — it really comes down to what kind of trip you want.

For example, if you want a variety of activities, head to an island like Crete (my son and I’s personal favorite). Beyond golden-sand beaches, you’ll find ancient ruins, hiking trails, water parks, and charming towns to explore.

Alessandro Greece
We had the best time playing along Greece’s beaches.

Marriott properties like the Domes Elounda, an Autograph Collection, have Montessori-inspired kids zones, and my son loved the outdoor patio with a whirlpool in our room. The hotel also has all-inclusive rates.

Corfu is an island with top-notch infrastructure, many family-friendly hotels, and stunning UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can also sail boats, ride horses, or visit the Corfu Aquarium. From there, if you want to get off the beaten path, you could visit islands like Paxos or Antipaxos, which are both smaller and more peaceful, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Hot Tip:

Many hotels in the Greek Islands operate seasonally, typically from late spring through summer. Make sure to plan ferries and transportation in advance. The islands move at a slower pace and can be crowded during these months, so it’s best to arrange details in advance to avoid limited availability and long waits.

Final Thoughts

Europe is full of family-friendly countries, but the Mediterranean and Adriatic regions stand out for their strong family cultures and welcoming attitude toward children. For the most part, these countries are safe for kids, embrace many kid-friendly traditions, and offer amenities, hotels, and attractions that the whole family can enjoy.
