The Airbus A380 is recognized as the largest passenger airplane globally, both in capacity and size. Besides a handful of global routes, Etihad Airways, the UAE-based carrier, only operates this iconic double-decker jet to 1 U.S. city: New York (JFK).

Now, the airline has revealed a surprise development. Etihad will begin operating the Airbus A380 between Toronto (YYZ) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) starting on June 24, 2025, saying goodbye to A380 service from New York.

This is what you should know about the change.

Etihad’s A380 Service Landing in Toronto, Departing From New York

Etihad has significantly reduced its Airbus A380 fleet since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and has brought the aircraft in and out of service. Etihad’s Airbus A380 service between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport resumed in April 2024 after a few years’ pause.

Now, the carrier has announced it will be replacing its New York service to Abu Dhabi with the Airbus A350-1000, which currently operates the Toronto (YYZ) route. Moreover, Etihad is set to launch daily service from Toronto to Abu Dhabi with its famed Airbus A380.

Etihad is essentially swapping planes between Toronto and New York, and Canadian passengers will benefit from the additional capacity that the Airbus A380 offers.

Starting June 24, 2025, Etihad will operate its Airbus A380 from Toronto according to the following schedule:

“Deploying the A380 on the popular Toronto route is a strategic move to meet customer demand for increased capacity while expanding our network,” said Arik De, Etihad Airways’ chief revenue and commercial officer. “Given Toronto’s popularity among Etihad’s customers, enhancing our capacity in the Canadian market is a logical step.”

This also means that Canadian travelers will get to experience 2 of the most premium experiences in commercial aviation that Etihad happens to offer: “The Residence,” a private, 3-room suite in the sky, and Etihad First Class Apartments, a private suite with a separate bed and seat, both available exclusively on Etihad’s Airbus A380.

Hot Tip:

Booking The Residence can be quite challenging and can really stretch your budget, but using miles to book Etihad’s First Class Apartment is a much more manageable option. Check out our review of flying Etihad Airways Airbus A380 First Class Apartment from London to Abu Dhabi.

Final Thoughts

While New York will lose Etihad’s Airbus A380 service (temporarily, we hope), the Airbus A350-1000 service from Etihad will still provide an excellent passenger experience — though it doesn’t offer first class.

However, if you want to experience opulence in the sky on Etihad’s Airbus A380 from New York, you’ll need to act quickly before the A380 service relocates to Toronto. Otherwise, you can easily fly from numerous U.S. cities to Toronto and enjoy the best that Etihad has to offer.
