Qantas confirmed today that its long-awaited Project Sunrise flights will launch in October 2027, operating the first-ever nonstop service between Sydney (SYD) and London (LHR) — and becoming the longest commercial flights in the world.

Tickets go on sale in February 2027. Sydney to New York (JFK) is confirmed as the next route after London.

What Makes Project Sunrise Such a Big Deal?

The Kangaroo Route between Australia and the UK has existed since 1947. Back then, getting from Sydney to London meant 4 days in the air and 7 stops: Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo, Castel Benito, and Rome. Each generation of aircraft knocked another stop out of the journey. Project Sunrise removes the last one.

That’s not just a marketing line. It’s genuinely the end of a 79-year relay race for Qantas.

The flights are operated on a purpose-built Airbus A350-1000ULR (ultra-long range), a variant of the A350 that doesn’t exist off the shelf. Airbus fitted it with an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank, giving it a range of nearly 10,000 miles and the ability to stay airborne for up to 22 hours. Qantas is taking delivery of 12 of these aircraft in total.

The cabin holds 238 passengers across 4 classes. And here’s the detail that will matter most to Upgraded Points readers: More than 40% of seats are allocated to premium cabins across first, business, and premium economy. This is not an airplane built around economy class. It’s an airplane built on the assumption that people willing to pay a premium for a nonstop flight want a product that matches.

That product has been in development for years, built in collaboration with the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, design firm Caon, and restaurateur Neil Perry. The cabin includes the world’s first purpose-built onboard Wellbeing Zone — a dedicated space for movement, stretching, and hydration throughout the flight. Lighting is handled by 12 custom scenes, including Sunrise, Sunset, and Awake, all grounded in circadian-rhythm science to help passengers adjust to destination time zones and arrive feeling less destroyed.

Flights are scheduled to depart Sydney in the early afternoon, arriving in London in the early morning — a departure time designed with the science of the journey in mind, not just airline scheduling convenience.

The first aircraft, named Vega after a World War II-era Catalina flying boat that operated Qantas’ wartime “Double Sunrise” missions, is currently undergoing test flights in France. A second is in its 8-week certification program. By the time the 12th aircraft arrives, more than 360 pilots and 1,200 cabin crew will have been trained to operate the fleet.

On the competitive side, Qantas isn’t sweating the reopening of Middle Eastern routes and the price pressure that comes with it. CFO Rob Marcolina made it clear the airline sees Project Sunrise as a fundamentally different product. Over two-thirds of Qantas’ international passengers are premium leisure travelers, and the airline says the intent to book a Project Sunrise flight has climbed from 58% to 70% since February 2026. Among premium travelers specifically, that number hits 80%.

The airline’s existing nonstop long-haul routes — including Perth (PER) to London (LHR), Melbourne (MEL) to Dallas (DFW), and Auckland (AKL) to New York (JFK) — already rank among its highest-rated services. Nonstop just works for the people who choose it.

Final Thoughts

Qantas Project Sunrise is one of those announcements that actually lives up to the weight people put on it. Sydney to London nonstop has been talked about for nearly a decade, and with an October 2027 launch date now on the books and planes in livery at the Airbus factory, it’s real.

The aircraft is genuinely purpose-built for the journey in ways that go beyond just adding a fuel tank. The cabin design, lighting system, and wellbeing focus are all aimed at solving the core problem of very long flights.

If you’re planning to fly between Australia and the UK, February 2027 is when to watch for tickets. For a flight this historic, booking early will matter.
