Spirit Airlines has shared that Monterrey (MTY) will become its newest destination in Mexico as of June 22, 2022, when it begins daily flights from both Austin (AUS) and Houston (IAH).
“We’re excited about growing our international service from Texas with new daily nonstop service from Austin (AUS) and Houston (IAD),” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines.
Let’s take a look at these exciting new routes in more detail.
Spirit Airlines Connects Texas to Monterrey, Mexico
Monterrey will be Spirit Airline’s fourth Mexican destination, joining Cancún (CUN), San José del Cabo (SJD), and Puerto Vallarta (PVR).
Hot Tip: Despite being an ultra-low-cost carrier, Spirit has a loyalty program called Free Spirit through which you can earn and redeem points to fly for even less.
This inland city will be Spirit’s first non-beach destination in Mexico. Instead of trying to capture vacationers, these routes from Austin and Houston to Monterrey are meant for the year-round VFR (“visiting friends and relatives”) market.
Austin (AUS) to Monterrey (MTY)
Spirit’s new route between Austin and Monterrey will be the only nonstop connection between the 2 important cities.
The daily flights are scheduled in such a way that passengers will be able to maximize their time in Monterrey with a morning departure from — and an early evening return to — Austin (AUS):
Spirit’s Houston (IAH) to Monterrey (MTY) route will face competition from Mexican low-cost carrier VivaAerobus and United, both of which already offer multiple flights per day between the 2 cities.
Mexico is always a good idea. Now, thanks to Spirit’s 2 new routes to Monterrey, Texans are even more spoiled for choice when it comes to flight options to take them south of the border.
