After experiencing flaky mobile hotspot connections, throttled data, and connection complaints from kids in the backseat, I decided to try something different on a road trip from Texas to Florida. We brought a Starlink Mini along for the ride so we’d have a reliable connection.

A compact and travel-friendly satellite dish, the Starlink Mini turned our family SUV into a remote office and classroom. I stayed on top of work from the passenger seat while my kids did schoolwork and streamed entertainment in the back.

Here’s why I got a Starlink Mini, how it worked for our road trip, and what I plan to do with it next.

Why We Wanted Wi-Fi for a Road Trip

We were on the road for 4 days, including work and school days. I had meetings to attend and tasks to complete, and my kids needed to do their schoolwork while also wanting to stream shows, play games, and read e-books in the backseat.

On previous road trips, we’d used mobile hot spots on our phones, but found them lacking. Cell coverage was mostly fine, but we quickly reached the limit for mobile hot spot data and experienced slow speeds, making it difficult to accomplish anything.

We needed something more reliable so we could all get connected without concerns about data limits and slow speeds.

I considered getting an Inseego hot spot from T-Mobile for $264. However, I didn’t like that the data plan was continuous, so I couldn’t easily pause and restart the service. We don’t take road trips every month, so I didn’t want to pay regularly for service I’d probably only use a handful of times each year.

I was also concerned we wouldn’t get service everywhere. We’ve visited remote cabins and national parks where our otherwise reliable mobile connections failed. If we got the T-Mobile hot spot, we’d be on the same network as our phones. Looking for better coverage, I considered satellite internet that should work anywhere with a clear view of the sky.

Though the Starlink Mini is more expensive (regular price $499) than the T-Mobile hot spot I considered, I saw long-term value in using portable satellite internet.

The Starlink Mini is a compact version of the standard Starlink satellite internet dish. It’s about the size of a laptop (11.75 inches x 10.2 inches x 1.45 inches) and weighs less than 7 pounds. I can easily slide it into my backpack next to my laptop without adding too much bulk.

Starlink Mini vs. laptop
The Starlink Mini is slightly larger than a laptop.

It can run off a 12-volt power supply or an inverter. There’s an integrated kickstand, and it self-orients to satellites. It’s aimed at campers, RVers, remote workers, and travelers.

Its portability and flexibility are what made me most interested in using it. Starlink Mini works throughout the U.S. and for international travel, with coverage in Canada, Mexico, most of South America, most of Europe, Australia, and limited areas in Africa and Asia. It also works while in motion and on boats while inland or in marinas.

I consider Starlink Mini a versatile Wi-Fi solution that I can take with me wherever I go. It allows me to get work done and stay connected without worrying about whether my mobile hot spot will work or if there’s a decent connection at our destination. It’s also a great tool to prepare for natural disasters at home, as I’ve experienced multiple disaster- and weather-related internet outages.

I bought my Starlink for $499 plus tax. The price sometimes drops to $299, but I unfortunately didn’t catch it during one of those sale windows. With a Roam service plan, I can pause service to turn it on and off as needed. When I need it, I pay for a month of service and can put it on hold so I don’t have to pay every month.

The Starlink Mini receives automatic firmware updates, so I expect it to remain useful for years and continue to improve as Starlink expands its network. However, I’ll probably need to replace the hardware at some point as technology evolves.

Bottom Line:

Was satellite Wi-Fi that cost about $500 plus service worth buying for a road trip? Not really. But I bought it for more than a single trip. I’ll use it for camping, destinations with poor connectivity, international travel, and as a backup for natural disaster outages at home.

We set up the Starlink Mini ahead of our road trip, placing it in our SUV’s sunroof and dangling the power cord to plug it in at the center console. Setting up an online account, we downloaded the app, got an account, and signed up for service.

I researched Starlink Mini mounts, but found the easiest solution was using our sunroof.

Starlink Mini offers Residential (intended for use at a fixed location and starting at $80 a month) and Roam (mobile) service plans. I got the Roam 50GB plan ($50 per month), though I later upgraded to the unlimited plan.

With installation and service complete, we tested the connection, and it worked as soon as we pulled our SUV out of the garage with a clear view of the sky. In all, it took about 20 minutes from unboxing to connection, including creating an account and setting up service.

We had no trouble with connection speed, and I was able to make video calls, upload files, and complete all my regular work tasks. The kids could access their school apps and stream videos. We experienced a drop in service once as we drove through a thunderstorm, but we were back online in about 5 minutes.

When we reached our destination (a cabin), we set it up on the porch and got connected. That was as easy as moving the device out of our SUV, plugging it in, and using the kickstand to point it at the sky.

We hit the 50GB data limit about halfway through our trip, probably becayse of the video calls (or the countless cat videos consumed by 3 kids in the backseat). Once we ran out of data, we couldn’t get a connection and had to upgrade our plan to unlimited. I paid the $115 difference between my original $50 monthly plan and the $165 per month unlimited plan, and we were back online right away.

Once we got home, I switched my plan to Standby Mode. The plan is $5 per month and allows for unlimited low-speed data (approximately 500kbps) for emergency messaging and software updates, with the ability to reactivate high-speed service when needed.

Here’s a recap of the essentials if you’re considering a Starlink Mini for travel:

  • The dish is $499 (often $299 on sale) and requires a subscription of $50 to $150 per month for service.
  • You can pause service and pay $5 per month when you don’t need a connection.
  • It connects using satellites and needs an unobstructed view of the sky. The connection can be affected by severe weather.
  • Connections are available in motion, internationally, and on a boat.
  • Boat connections are limited to inland waterways and marinas in your account country. You can pay an additional fee for Ocean Mode for enhanced coverage.
  • International connections are only in available markets and limited to 2 months per trip before you’re asked to transfer your account to a new country.

Final Thoughts

Getting a Starlink Mini was a splurge, but it was such a relief to have a reliable internet connection. I’m glad to have it available for trips when I’m not sure about the connection, and it makes me feel more confident about working remotely from the road. It also gives me peace of mind knowing I have a backup connection I can turn on as needed if we experience a natural disaster and can’t get online otherwise.
