Redeeming Virgin Points for Virgin Atlantic flights has changed.

As of October 30, 2024, the U.K.-based carrier has made every seat on every Virgin Atlantic flight available to book using Virgin Points.

Furthermore, significant changes have been made to redemption rates with the introduction of dynamic pricing, which will see some seats get cheaper and some almost triple in cost.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Changes

The fact that every seat onboard Virgin flights is now bookable with Virgin Points is pretty fantastic. This will give Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members more opportunity to use their points in a way that’s almost unheard of in the world of points and miles.

However, Virgin now uses dynamic pricing for award seats. This means that the number of points needed for an award seat can get sky-high in a similar way that cash seats do when aircraft are close to sold out.

This could be off-putting when deciding whether to transfer your hard-earned points to the Flying Club, especially when factoring in the eye-watering taxes and fees you’d have to pay on top.

On the other hand, some seats now sell as new so-called Saver award seats, which are now on sale for less than Virgin Atlantic has ever offered before.

For example, you can now redeem Virgin Points for flights between the East Coast and London for as low as 6,000 points!

Award vouchers have also changed. They are now valid “up to a maximum of 75k points for Flying Club Red tier members, or 150k points for Flying Club Silver or Gold tier members based on status at the time of voucher redemption.”

And to end on a high: if you are paying cash for your Virgin Atlantic flight, you’ll now earn 50% more Virgin Points on Upper Class tickets and 75% more on Premium tickets.

Bottom Line:

Virgin Atlantic has shifted to dynamic pricing for award flights, making some business-class flight redemptions cheaper and others more expensive when factoring in taxes and fees.

Final Thoughts

It appears that Virgin has tried to go for a balanced approached with the changes to its Flying Club redemptions

On one hand, you can now book Saver Rewards for as low as 6,000 from the U.S. to London, can earn more points on cash Premium and Upper Class tickets, and have the ability to book every single seat on a Virgin Atlantic flight with points.

On the flip side, Virgin has followed in partner Delta’s footsteps and has introduced a new maximum of 350,000 Virgin Points for an Upper Class redemption

Whether you see this move from Virgin Atlantic as a balanced approach or not, it’s clear that the carrier has certainly grabbed attention with this announcement. We’re optimistic that with the new dynamic pricing, we’ll keep enjoying great award redemptions to use our points on.
