Alcatraz Island was once a fort, a military prison, and a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Indians of All Tribes occupied this island for 19 months in the 1960s in the name of freedom and the Native American civil rights.

Today, this island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and an exhibit where visitors can see what incarceration was like during its history.
