If you combine a luxury hotel with a great location and fantastic service, you might call it the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki.

On top of incredible amenities and small touches around the property that elevated my stay, I found my suite incredible. And every staff member at the property exemplified hospitality.

I spent 1 night at the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki in February 2026. I’m already yearning for another visit. Here are 6 things I loved about this property.

Booking Waldorf Astoria Helsinki

I didn’t book the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki directly through Hilton.

Through Hilton Honors, standard rooms were available starting at $391 or 108,000 points per night. Using 108,000 points to save $391 (the prepaid, nonchangeable rate) means using Hilton Honors points at just 0.36 cents per point — considerably less than our average valuation of Hilton Honors points at 0.5 cents each.

Instead, I booked my 1-night stay through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. I paid less and got extra benefits added on top.

Fine Hotels + Resorts was offering a 30% discount at the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki, with standard rooms starting at $325.68, taxes and fees included.

Since I have the Platinum Card® from American Express, this reservation counted toward my card’s annual hotel credit, offering up to $300 in statement credits each half of the year, up to $600 annually, toward prepaid bookings with Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection (note that the latter has a 2-night minimum stay requirement).

After accounting for the $300 statement credit, I paid just $25.68 out of pocket for this stay. That’s a steal.

Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Benefits

Whether you’re getting a statement credit against your reservation or not, all bookings through Fine Hotels + Resorts include the following perks:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • $100 on-property credit (uses vary by property)
  • Room upgrade at check-in (based on availability)
  • Early check-in at noon (based on availability)

At the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki, the on-property credit could be used for dining but not spa services.

Location of Waldorf Astoria Helsinki

The Waldorf Astoria is in Helsinki’s Kruununhaka neighborhood near several small restaurants and cafés. It’s just a few blocks from the waterfront.

Reaching the hotel by taxi or public transportation takes 10 minutes from the central train station. From Helsinki Airport (HEL), taking a taxi to the hotel takes 25 to 30 minutes, while public transit takes about 45 minutes.

6 Things I Loved About Waldorf Astoria Helsinki

1. It Has a Fascinating History

The hotel now known as Waldorf Astoria Helsinki began its modern life as The Hotel Maria, which opened in 2023 after an extensive restoration of several 19th-century buildings in Helsinki’s Kruununhaka district. And yes, the property encompasses several buildings.

The main building.

These interconnected townhouses, built in the late 1800s near Senate Square, originally served residential, administrative, and military-related functions, including use by Russian Imperial authorities and defense institutions when Finland was part of the Russian Empire. Over time, the complex reflected Helsinki’s role as both a civil capital and a strategic garrison city before being repurposed and carefully restored for luxury hospitality.

In October 2025, the property was reflagged under Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria banner, becoming the brand’s debut in the Nordics. The transition linked the site’s layered past, from imperial-era military use to private redevelopment and then a household name in luxury hotels.

2. Service Was Fantastic

The hotel provided great service throughout my stay, but service was also great before I arrived and after I’d checked out.

The hotel emailed me a few days before check-in with some information about on-site restaurants and also asked for my estimated arrival time. I used this opportunity to ask about dinner reservations and to clarify whether I could use my on-property credit for dinner this way. Staff members were eager to help.

On arrival, a bellhop appeared out of nowhere to greet me and carry my luggage, even looking in the taxi to ensure I’d not left anything behind. That was a nice gesture.

Staff at the front desk during check-in were really friendly, explaining the hotel’s features and helping me change my dinner reservation time because I’d messed up the time zone conversion and had a meeting conflict.

The friendly employee also provided a written copy of my Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits while explaining my on-property credit, late checkout guarantee, and that I’d been upgraded to an attic suite with a private steam room, thanks to my combination of Hilton Honors Gold status and the room upgrade benefit through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts.

A bellhop escorted me to my room (1405) to show me how the steam room worked and how to use the controls.

Checkout was when the service really shone.

On top of my guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, I discussed plans with staff, and the employees were very accommodating. My train to northern Finland departed after 11 p.m., and staff allowed me to keep working in the Living Room and bar as I pleased. Additionally, I left my luggage in the storage room near reception while going out for dinner and to the supermarket to get snacks for the train.

Bottom Line:

Staff members consistently smiled while answering my questions about sticking around the property and leaving luggage well past checkout time, on top of the typical elements of a hotel stay. The hospitality was truly heartwarming.

3. Some Rooms Have Steam Rooms or Saunas

Whether you book directly or get upgraded (as was my case), you can stay in a room with a private steam room or a sauna. These rooms are a fantastic introduction to Finnish sauna culture and also provide a great way to spoil yourself during your stay.

The room I stayed in was an Attic Suite With Spa Facilities, costing over $800 per night. Compare that to the standard room pricing at $391.

The attic suite had a large king bed, leather sofa, and exposed beams for a unique feel. Each side of the bed had a nightstand with bottled water, and each side of the headboard had a flip-out reading light.

Built into the walls, I found lots of closet space with a full-length mirror, shelves, hangers, an umbrella, an iron, an ironing board, a steamer, and a laundry bag.

Closer to the windows, there was a small, round table with a pair of leather armchairs. The table held a booklet with information about the room and the room service menu. I also found a small flower and a welcome gift — a note and chocolates — on the table.

Bathroom

The pièce de résistance was the massive bathroom, located a few steps below the bedroom. Straight ahead was a pair of sinks with a large mirror, a close-up mirror, and a shelf beneath holding towels, slippers, and bathrobes. There was a deep tub in the corner; I loved that it had a handheld shower wand and a table nearby for holding stuff.

The interior wall had a small room with a toilet and a miniature sink, as well as a shower cabin with a glass door. The shower had both handheld and rainfall options. On the wall, there were pump bottles of bath products.

There was a glass door leading from the shower into the steam room. The steam room was controlled through a digital panel in the bathroom. It had a rounded shape, with all tiles, and took about 30 minutes to fully heat up.

4. You Can Do Everything From a Tablet

My suite had 2 tablets: one near the door to the hallway and one near the steps in the bathroom. Each tablet used magnets to clip to the wall and could be removed easily. Using either tablet, I could connect my phone to the room’s speakers via Bluetooth, turn lights on and off, dim the lights, request housekeeping, book spa services, and more.

5. Dining and Drinking Options Were Excellent, Though Limited

I enjoyed all of the hotel’s food and beverage outlets, though the range wasn’t extensive.

Lilja Dining Room

The main restaurant, located on the ground floor near reception, was Lilja Dining Room. This is where I had breakfast. Breakfast was available from 6:30 to 10 a.m. on weekdays and from 7 to 11 a.m. on weekends. Afternoon tea was available on Saturdays only, offered from noon to 4 p.m.

During breakfast, a small buffet with pastries, yogurts, cold cuts, and fruits was available for guests.

Each table also had a small menu advertising coffee, tea, juices, and items available on request, such as sausages, eggs, pancakes, and more.

The menu also had à la carte items for those not choosing the buffet. These options included avocado toast, eggs Benedict, and eggs Royale.

I was excited to see the “on request” section mentioned vegan items. I received some vegan yogurt and feta to complement my buffet selections.

Lilja Terrace

Lilja Terrace was in a sunroom, reached by a few steps down from the lobby level. It offered lunch and dinner from noon to 11 p.m. daily. The setup, with natural light and trees, made for a great atmosphere.

I ate dinner here to use my on-property credit. Dinner offerings included a chef’s seasonal menu, caviar, burgers, lobster, and a braised kohlrabi vegetarian option.

The kohlrabi option wasn’t anything I’d order again, but I enjoyed the bed of risotto and mushrooms underneath.

Peacock Bar

Located on the same floor as the reception, the Peacock Bar was the hotel’s bar and was open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily. This fully stocked bar had an extensive list of wines, beers, cocktails, mocktails, and even espresso-based beverages.

I loved that staff never brought just a drink to customers. Olives, warm notes, crackers, and other accompaniments always appeared out of nowhere.

6. Amenities Were Plentiful

Spa

The spa was found in a different building from the reception, and signs made it easy to locate. Along with massages, facials, and other services, guests could book a 2-hour window for access to the sun room, sauna, and steam room — which were also open to the public for bookings and were single-gender.

Fitness Center

Following the signs to the fitness center led me into a separate building from the reception. The gym wasn’t large but had a good mix of multifunction machines, free weights, cardio equipment, mats, and other equipment.

There was a water station at the gym’s entrance. The fitness center was up a flight of stairs — meaning it wasn’t handicap-accessible.

Living Room

The aptly named Living Room, opposite Peacock Bar, provided a space to sit, work, relax, or just gather with people outside your guest room.

Shop

Between the reception and the Living Room, a small shop sold jewelry and luxury items like sweaters and scarves.

Elevators

There were 3 elevators available across from reception. Accessing guest floors required tapping a key card.

Final Thoughts

My stay at the Waldorf Astoria Helsinki left me wanting more. In addition to its fascinating history and great dining options, the property offered several top-notch amenities.

Then, there was the incredible suite upgrade I received. The service was the best aspect, though, and staying just 1 night here was far too short.

This is a property I would eagerly return to, and I recommend it highly to anyone looking for a great hotel stay in the Nordics.
