The author stayed as an invited guest of Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya. All opinions are the author’s own, and the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya had no input in any part of this review.

Cancún has quietly evolved for years. It’s still very much a popular spring break and party destination if that’s what you’re after. But over the past decade, it’s also become a serious luxury hotspot, with brands including St. Regis, Rosewood, and Alila, among others.

I had the chance to visit the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya with my wife and 3 daughters during peak spring break in March 2026. I wanted to see where it stood, not just as a luxury resort, but as one that could deliver for families.

After a couple of nights on the property, here are the 7 things that stood out most from a family perspective.

1. It’s Just 15 Minutes From the Airport But Felt Worlds Away

If you’ve traveled to the Riviera Maya, especially if you’ve stayed south of Cancún, you probably know the drill. Land, grab your bags, and then settle in for a 30- to 45-minute drive to reach many of the region’s top resorts.

That wasn’t our experience this time.

The Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya is only about 15 minutes from Cancún International Airport (CUN). Traveling with kids, that was a big plus. We went from landing to being poolside faster than I’m used to, which made our arrival day feel easier and way less stressful.

The resort sits inside a gated development right off the main highway. After clearing security, there’s about a 10-minute drive through the property grounds before you reach the main building. Somewhere along that stretch, everything quiets down as the traffic noise disappears, and it suddenly feels a lot more secluded than expected for being this close to the airport.

It’s right on the beach and shares the area with the Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort, next door. From a distance, they look somewhat similar, but the vibe is completely different once you’re actually there.

The Hilton feels busy and energetic. The Waldorf Astoria feels calm, relaxed, and intentionally low-key — which, for our trip, was exactly what we were looking for.

2. The Massive Rooms Worked Well for Our Family

Space is a premium amenity when traveling with kids, and this is where the property really stood out for us.

The base rooms are nearly 700 square feet, which is noticeably larger than the space at most resorts in the area. But what really made a difference for us was booking a second room on points for our daughters and requesting connecting rooms.

That setup gave us close to 1,400 square feet, and we felt it right away. Instead of everyone being on top of each other trying to make 1 room work, we all had room to spread out, decompress, and enjoy the space.

Between the 2 rooms, we had multiple bathrooms (a huge win with kids), a comfortable living area, and 2 large balconies overlooking both the pool and the ocean. It flowed really well for our family, as nothing felt tight or hectic, even when we were all trying to get ready at once.

And then there’s the outdoor space.

3. The Outdoor Soaking Tub Was Worth Using

At first, the outdoor soaking tub on the balcony felt like a nice feature we weren’t sure we’d use, but we ended up using it each day.

Whether it was a quick reset in the afternoon or a way to wind down after dinner, soaking in the outdoor tub became part of our routine. The kids loved it, and it made the balcony more than just a place to sit and enjoy some views. It felt like a relaxing space we wanted to spend time in.

The private balcony tub was my go-to spot to unwind after pool days with the family.

The tub isn’t just a perk for certain room types; pretty much every room comes with a balcony soaking tub. The only exception is the swim-up rooms, which trade the tub for direct pool access.

Compared to other resorts in the area, where outdoor space can sometimes feel a bit secondary, this setup felt more practical, and it was something we enjoyed throughout the stay.

4. The Food Was Elevated

Food is usually where resorts — even really nice ones — can fall short. Everything looks great at first, but after a couple of meals, it can feel repetitive and the flavors a bit bland.

The Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya doesn’t have many restaurants, but the dining is well done.

At Chaya, the all-day restaurant, breakfast quickly became part of our routine. There’s a full buffet, but also a lot of made-to-order options — eggs, Mexican dishes, pastries, and fresh juices. It never felt like we were eating the same thing every day.

Dinner at JA’O was our favorite of the trip. It’s not even the flagship restaurant, but we were shocked by how delicious all our dishes were on our first night here. We ordered a pork shank that was really well done, a simple pasta for one of my daughters that she was very happy with, and fish tacos with sea bass that were fresh and easy to enjoy.

Dessert stole the show. The red velvet churros (made to order) with caramel and a sweet cheese sauce were unexpectedly good, and we kept thinking of them after.

We also had dinner at the property’s more elevated signature restaurant, Malpeque. The highlight there was a whole fish cooked in a clay oven. It felt a bit more upscale, but still very rooted in local flavors.

The whole fish, cooked in a clay oven, was hearty and flavorful — better than it looked.

The meal was excellent, though on the pricier side. That said, we still found ourselves wishing we had gone back to JA’O a second time.

Even lunch by the pool was better than expected. One afternoon, we ordered ceviche and a few lighter bites. The ceviche in particular stood out as fresh, bright, and not just an afterthought on the menu.

Another standout was mixed ceviche by the pool.

There aren’t a dozen dining options, but we never felt like we needed more. Everything we had was solid, and more importantly, it didn’t feel repetitive by the end of the trip.

5. It Felt Calm — Even During Spring Break

We visited during peak spring break, so I was expecting crowds and a bit of chaos. But walking into the lobby, the first thing I noticed was how quiet it looked and felt.

Check-in was easy with no lines or waiting. We were greeted in the lobby seating area by an agent who came over to us and walked us through our reservation right there, which felt much more relaxed than the usual front desk setup.

Overall, the hotel didn’t feel crowded at all, especially for Cancún during one of the busiest times of year. We later found out the property was around 50% occupancy, and that matched how it felt throughout our stay.

Out of curiosity, we walked over to the Hilton next door the next day to find a totally different vibe.

The lobby was packed, things were buzzing, and it felt like the resort was running at full speed. It looked fun, but with a lot more energy and movement everywhere. Coming back to the Waldorf Astoria, everything immediately slowed back down again in a sharp contrast to the Hilton next door.

What I appreciated most, though, was that it still worked really well with kids. We never felt out of place having our daughters with us, and it never felt like we had to tone it down because of the ambiance. It just felt comfortable. We weren’t the only ones with young kids there either, which made it feel that much more natural.

Hot Tip:

Cash rates here can easily climb into the $700 to $1,000 or higher range, depending on the time of year. That’s where Hilton Honors points or free night certificates can come into play. Award pricing often falls in the 95,000 to 110,000 points per night range, and if you have a free night certificate from a card like the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, this is exactly the type of property where outsized value is possible.

6. Pool and Beach Chairs Were Easy To Find

Lounging by the water is stressful at some resorts, requiring setting an alarm for 7 a.m., heading down half-awake just to claim a lounger, or risking not getting a spot at all. That wasn’t the case here at all.

Most mornings, we took our time with breakfast and didn’t make it down to the pool until around 9:30 or 10 a.m. I fully expected the best spots to be long gone by then, but they weren’t. We consistently had our pick of loungers, whether we wanted to be right by the pool or a little closer to the beach.

It might sound like a small thing, but it really changed how our days started. I didn’t need to set my alarm from the night before or rush downstairs to save chairs by the pool for the day.

We just showed up when we were ready. Even during spring break, we were able to grab a spot pretty much wherever we wanted by the pool.

7. The Small Touches Made It Better for Our Family

Sometimes it’s the small but thoughtful details that count.

When we walked into our room, the kids each had a stuffed bear on their bed, plus coloring books and a few simple touches that immediately made the room feel more welcoming. There was also a personalized amenity waiting for us — a nice touch without feeling overdone.

My favorite kid-friendly amenity was toddler-sized slippers for my 3-year-old daughter.

What stood out more was what the hotel had already thought of. There were baby-friendly items set up in the room, including a sink, a bath, and a diaper pail. We didn’t need them, but it showed the staff really understood family needs.

There’s no traditional kids club here, but there are still a few activities throughout the day. We joined a watercolor painting session by the pool (which a few adults also got into), and there was a bracelet-making session for younger kids.

This isn’t a resort with tons of structured kids programming, but between the pool, the beach, and a few thoughtful activities throughout the day, it’s more than enough.

Final Thoughts

The Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya isn’t trying to be the all-inclusive next door, and that’s the point. It doesn’t offer nonstop activities or unlimited everything, but it does have beautifully appointed rooms with extra space, high-quality food, and a much calmer and upscale vibe.

With kids, we appreciated how easy, relaxed, and comfortable everything felt. If you want a more refined, low-key side of Cancún that feels nothing like its party reputation, this is it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya good for families?

Yes — while it leans luxury and low-key, it works surprisingly well for families. Spacious rooms, connecting options, a calm pool area, and small daily activities make it easy to travel with kids without feeling out of place.

How far is the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya from the airport?

It’s about a 15-minute drive from Cancún International Airport, which is much closer than many other luxury resorts in the Riviera Maya. That shorter transfer makes a big difference, especially with kids.

There’s no traditional kids club, but the resort offers rotating activities like arts and crafts or poolside experiences. Combined with the pool and beach, there’s enough to keep kids entertained.

Is the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya all-inclusive?

No, it’s not an all-inclusive resort. Food and drinks are priced à la carte, but the dining quality is noticeably higher than what you’ll typically find at all-inclusive properties nearby.
