Air Canada is joining the list of airlines letting you boost your status through carbon offsets and Sustainable Aviation Fuel contributions. With this offer, you can earn up to 5,000 Status Qualifying Miles toward Aeroplan status.

The offer isn’t cheap, to be clear, and it’s only available for a month — from September 25 to October 25, 2025.

Should you take advantage of this offer? It depends on how much help you need toward Aeroplan status this year and the value you place on SQMs.

Here’s a closer look.

What Are Status Qualifying Miles (SQMs)?

Let’s start with a caveat: Aeroplan will move to a new way to earn status in 2026, doing away with the current system and moving to a revenue-based methodology.

Until the end of 2025, you earn status with a combination of Status Qualifying Segments (you basically get 1 SQS for each leg of a flight you take) and Status Qualifying Miles (SQMs). SQMs are awarded as a percentage of your flight distance, depending on the airline and cabin you flew in.

Put another way, you need SQMs to qualifying for elite status with Aeroplan, and you need more of them the higher the tier.

Get up to 5K SQMs Through SAF Contributions

Through October 25, 2025, you can get up to 5,000 SQMs through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) contributions on this page. You can purchase in increments of 150 kilograms of carbon offsets, ranging from 150 to 1,500, the maximum amount.

You receive 500 SQMs for every 150 kilograms of carbon offsets purchased. If you purchase the maximum amount, you pay CA$1,814.83 — roughly $1,300. That will give you 5,000 SQMs at roughly 26 cents per SQM.

Is that a good deal? It depends on several factors. It’s not an insignificant amount of money if you’re purchasing the maximum amount.

How much have you spent earning your other EQMs this year, and how many more do you need before the end of the year to reach your status goals? Can you reach them in other ways — and are those cheaper?

However, if you’re too busy to take additional trips for SQMs this year and want something you can do from home, this is an available option.

Final Thoughts

Through October 25, you can earn up to 5,000 bonus SQMs toward Aeroplan elite status through SAF contributions for carbon offsets. Whether this is a good deal is subjective, depending on your status goals, how far behind you are on reaching them, and what other ways you can pursue that get SQMs at a cheaper rate.
