Airbnb is testing a new way to give travelers extra peace of mind when booking a stay — but it comes at a price.

Without any fanfare, the company has rolled out an “Extended Cancellation Option” that allows eligible guests to pay an additional fee at checkout in exchange for the ability to cancel their reservation for a full refund up to 24 hours before check-in.

Here’s everything we know so far of this new cancellation feature.

Airbnb’s New Cancellation Add-On Gives Travelers More Flexibility

The biggest appeal of Airbnb‘s new Extended Cancellation Option is simple: more flexibility.

Traditionally, travelers who book listings with firm or strict cancellation policies risk losing some or all of their money if plans change. By paying an additional fee at checkout, eligible guests can cancel for any reason and still receive a full refund up to 24 hours before check-in.

That’s a significant improvement for travelers booking trips months in advance, especially when flights, work schedules, family plans, or other travel arrangements aren’t fully confirmed.

Currently, the feature is available in 12 countries: Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Türkiye, the United States, and Vietnam.

However, not every Airbnb listing qualifies. Although most properties with moderate, limited, firm, or strict cancellation policies are automatically eligible, Airbnb appears to be rolling out the feature gradually, so travelers may not see the option on every qualifying listing just yet. Hosts are enrolled by default and can opt out if they don’t want to participate.

Airbnb hasn’t publicly announced the feature and hasn’t disclosed how much the add-on costs yet. Pricing varies, based on what we’re seeing. For example, this $671 reservation that offers flexible cancellation for $72.68.

The home-sharing platform says hosts remain protected if a guest uses the add-on. Hosts still receive the payout they’re entitled to under their normal cancellation policy, while Airbnb covers the guest’s refund. The canceled dates are then reopened for other travelers to book.

The concept is similar to flexibility products offered by travel booking platform Hopper, which has built a successful business around selling travelers added cancellation and change protections. Airbnb appears to be betting that many travelers will be willing to pay extra for that same peace of mind.

Hot Tip:

While we don’t yet know how much Airbnb is charging for this added cancellation flexibility, don’t assume you need it. Many listings already offer flexible or moderate cancellation policies, so it pays to compare your options before booking. For more tips, check out our guide on how to book the perfect Airbnb.

Final Thoughts

Airbnb’s new Extended Cancellation Option gives travelers another way to protect themselves against changing plans — for a price. While the feature could appeal to anyone booking far in advance or dealing with uncertain travel plans, it may not be necessary if a listing already offers a generous cancellation policy.

The easiest way to avoid another fee? Start by looking for a listing with flexible cancellation terms. But if having the option to cancel almost up until check-in and still get a full refund gives you extra peace of mind, Airbnb’s new Extended Cancellation Option may be worth the added cost.
