American Airlines is shaking up its route network with exciting new additions and some strategic changes. The Fort Worth-based carrier has announced 5 new routes that will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and leisure travelers, while also making adjustments to its operations at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

Here’s everything you need to know about these updates, including the new routes to Canada and the discontinuation of a LaGuardia flight.

American Airlines Adds Flights From LaGuardia

American Airlines is introducing 3 new Saturday-only routes from its New York LaGuardia (LGA) hub, starting June 7, 2025, and running through August 30, 2025:

  • Bozeman, Montana (BZN)
  • Calgary, Alberta (YYC)
  • Kalispell, Montana (FCA)

These flights will use the Boeing 737 MAX 8, featuring 16 first-class recliners, 24 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 132 standard economy seats. Notably, the LaGuardia-to-Kalispell flight will become the airport’s longest route at 2,035 miles.

LaGuardia’s perimeter rule generally restricts flights beyond 1,500 miles, but an exception allows longer routes on Saturdays. American is clearly targeting leisure travelers with these additions, offering access to stunning outdoor destinations like Montana’s national parks and Canada’s Rocky Mountains.

However, with new routes come sacrifices. American will discontinue its LaGuardia-to-Philadelphia (PHL) route on June 5, citing a shift in priorities. While this short hop connected 2 American hubs, it was often criticized for using valuable LaGuardia slots for low-demand regional flights. Now, the airline is reallocating resources to focus on more in-demand routes.

Hot Tip:

These new flights are on sale now, available to book with cash or with American Airlines AAdvantage miles.

American Airlines Adds Flights to Canada

Expanding its reach further north, American Airlines is adding 2 new routes to Canada, also operating as Saturday-only flights:

Both routes will use the Embraer E175 regional jet. Impressively, the Dallas-to-Quebec flight will set a new record for American’s longest E175-operated route, spanning 1,655 miles and taking roughly 4 hours.

American is betting on strong demand for these destinations, which offer a mix of historic charm, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes. These additions highlight the airline’s commitment to connecting travelers with unique experiences in North America’s hidden gems.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines is doubling down on its leisure travel strategy with these new routes, focusing on connecting flyers to breathtaking outdoor destinations and charming Canadian cities. While the addition of Saturday-only routes presents logistical challenges — as other airlines trying similar routes with the same restrictions in the past have failed — it reflects the airline’s effort to stay competitive in an evolving market.

For travelers, this means more opportunities to explore off-the-beaten-path locations. However, with the loss of the LaGuardia-to-Philadelphia route, frequent flyers may feel the sting of change. As always, staying informed and flexible is key to maximizing your travel plans.
