American Airlines is rolling out a new way to pay for award travel.

Over the next few weeks, eligible AAdvantage members will be able to combine cash and miles to book a single ticket on aa.com and in the American app. The feature won’t appear for everyone at once; American says it will reach members over the coming weeks.

For anyone who has checked their mileage balance to realize it’s just below the cost of an award flight, this closes a frustrating gap. Let’s check out how it works.

What Cash and Miles Means for AAdvantage Members

Travelers gain flexibility here. Instead of choosing between paying the full cost of a flight or burning a big chunk of miles, AAdvantage members can choose both payment types and apply whatever amount of each they prefer.

American’s own example shows an account with 37,292 miles using 11,100 of them plus $311.37 in cash, leaving 26,192 miles in the bank for the next trip. That said, we don’t yet know how good of a deal this is.

American hasn’t said how it will price these bookings, and that missing detail is pretty important. In the sole example provided, we don’t know how much money was saved by redeeming 11,000 miles, for example.

If the airline assigns miles a fixed cents-per-mile value, members will be able to judge the value at a glance. If the pricing works like American’s dynamic award redemptions already do, the value could swing from route to route and day to day. Until the feature rolls out broadly, giving us a chance to test it, there’s no way to compare what your miles are worth here against a straight award ticket or a cash fare.

That missing valuation is a big deal.

Hot Tip:

For context, we value AAdvantage miles at 1.4 cents each, so aim for roughly that number when redeeming AAdantage miles for travel.

How To Book With Cash and Miles

This option sits inside the normal checkout path, rather than in a separate award search. That means it will feel familiar when you use it for the first time.

Once the feature reaches your account, the steps look like this:

  • Log in to your AAdvantage account and search for your desired flights, priced in cash.
  • At checkout, you’ll see an optional trip insurance offer.
  • After the insurance step, available cash and miles options appear. A slider lets you set the combination that fits your balance and budget.
  • The cost summary updates automatically as you move the slider, so you can see the exact split before committing.
  • Enter your payment information and complete the booking.

The slider is what you use to determine how many miles to spend, and the remaining cash due adjusts in real time. That makes it easy to use up an awkward leftover balance without draining the account or to lean on cash when you’d rather hoard miles for a premium-cabin redemption later.

Final Thoughts

Cash and miles bookings are a welcome addition, and the mechanics look clean and simple. The flexibility alone will appeal to members with orphaned balances or anyone who’d rather not go all-in on either cash or miles.

However, we don’t know enough yet to know how valuable this feature is.

Whether this turns into a tool savvy travelers use often or a convenience that comes with a value tradeoff … well that’s something we can only assess once bookings go live. Keep an eye on your account in the weeks ahead, and do some quick math as you play with the slider.
