American Airlines intends to expand its route network in Europe by adding new routes to Edinburgh (EDI), Athens, Madrid, Milan, and Rome next summer.

For the first time since 2019, American will start operating again to Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI). The launch of these new routes will help the airline strengthen its presence in Europe.

Now, let’s delve into all the details surrounding American’s exciting European expansion.

New Routes for Summer 2025

American Airlines has announced 4 new routes and 1 route resumption.

Here’s a look at what’s coming for next summer:

  • Chicago (ORD) to Madrid (MAD): Daily service will begin March 30, 2025, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8.
  • Charlotte (CLT) to Athens (ATH): Daily service will begin June 5, 2025, and will be operated by a Boeing 777-200.
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Edinburgh (EDI): Daily service resumes May 23, 2025, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8.
  • Miami (MIA) to Rome (FCO): Daily service will begin July 5, 2025, and will be operated by a Boeing 777-200.
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Milan (MXP): Daily service will begin May 23, 2025, and will be operated by a Boeing 787-8.

All aircraft feature 3 cabins: business class, premium economy, and economy, which will give customers a range of options for comfort and pricing preferences.

“We look forward to providing customers more ways to visit their favorite destinations in Europe next summer,” said Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning. “Resuming service to Edinburgh and adding new routes to other popular destinations across the continent will offer customers convenient access from American’s industry-leading domestic network to all that Europe has to offer.”

From Philadelphia (PHL), American customers will be able to connect from over 80 destinations in the U.S. to 17 transatlantic destinations, including a resumed service to Edinburgh.

American Airlines will now fly direct from Miami to Rome. Currently, there is just 1 daily flight connecting the 2 cities, operated by ITA Airways. This is an underserved route, considering the number of Italians in South Florida and the high demand from travelers who wish to visit Italy, a sought-after summer destination.

With additional service from Charlotte, North Carolina to Athens in 2025, American will offer 4 daily flights to Greece from more U.S. airports than any other airline next summer.

Finally, with these new European routes, American will connect Chicago to Madrid for the first time ever. That provides competition for fellow Oneworld member Iberia that also serves this route.

Hot Tip:

These are new routes, so don’t expect excellent award rates. Award prices usually start off high with most new routes, but they eventually stabilize.

Final Thoughts

This is good news for American Airlines, which has been slow to expand internationally in recent years. New routes from American hubs connect to Athens, Madrid, Milan, and Rome. Service to Edinburgh will resume after being discontinued in 2019.

These new routes for next summer will make it easier for travelers to explore different parts of Europe with fewer stops along the way.
