New Yorkers will soon be able to jet off to Japan’s capital, Tokyo, with American Airlines, thanks to its new nonstop service from New York’s JFK.

American’s daily service will take to the skies for the first time on June 28, 2024 — just before the peak summer travel period.

“This new service will complement flights offered by our joint business partner, Japan Airlines, giving more ways for our customers to travel between the U.S. and Japan,” said Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network and schedule planning at American.

Here are the details you need to know about American’s new service to Tokyo.

American’s New Service to Tokyo From New York

American Airlines and Oneworld elite members will benefit from a new nonstop service from New York to Tokyo Haneda (HND) this summer.

American will operate between JFK and Haneda daily with the following schedule:

  • Depart New York (JFK) 11:25 a.m. — Arrive Tokyo (HND) 2:30 p.m. (+1)
  • Depart Tokyo (HND) 4:30 p.m. — Arrive New York (JFK) 4:35 p.m.

Despite having mentioned the route’s inauguration date, tickets are not currently available for purchase with cash or via AAdvantage Miles.

American will deploy its fleet of Boeing 777-200 aircraft on the route to Haneda. These long-haul, wide-body aircraft feature 3 cabins with 37 lie-flat business class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 24 recliner seats in premium economy, and a total of 221 seats in economy.

Hot Tip:

Fares might not be published yet, but we’d venture to guess that a round-trip from New York to Tokyo would cost a pretty penny — even in economy. Luckily, there are many ways to earn American Airlines AAdvantage Miles, which you can redeem for flights to Japan instead.

Even with the addition of this route, the airline’s 3rd nonstop service to Tokyo from the U.S., American has fewer flights connecting the 2 countries than Delta and United. No other U.S. airline currently operates a nonstop service from JFK to Tokyo.

Instead, Japanese carrier ANA and the nation’s flag carrier Japan Airlines and fellow Oneworld member airline — which recently unveiled its flagship Airbus A350 on the route — operate at least 1 daily service on the route.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines’s service from JFK to Haneda, set to debut in June 2024, will increase daily service between the 2 airports from 3 to 4. It will also mean more ways for frequent American Airlines and Oneworld flyers to travel between the 2 cities.
