American Express has added a new redemption option for its cash-back credit cards, available as of October 29, 2026.

Customers with a U.S. consumer cash-back card can now redeem Reward Dollars as a deposit into an American Express High Yield Savings Account (HYSA). Additionally, small-business owners with the Graphite™ Business Cash Unlimited Card can move their Reward Dollars to an Amex Business Checking account.

Nothing is changing about the value of your Reward Dollars. What is changing, however, is where you can send these funds, giving cardholders another redemption option.

How the New Reward Dollars Redemption Option Works

Consumer American Express cards that earn Reward Dollars, such as the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express and Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, can now redeem their rewards directly into an Amex HYSA at face value, meaning each Reward Dollar is worth $1.

There’s no minimum redemption amount, so you can move $1 or $1,000, for example, at a time.

Once deposited, the money earns the account’s regular variable Annual Percentage Yield (APY). As of October 28, 2026, that rate was 3.20% APY.

Interest compounds daily on these accounts and is paid monthly. If you have more than 1 Amex savings account, you can choose which one receives the deposit as you move through the redemption process. Amex says Reward Dollars deposits generally post to your account within 4 business days.

For small businesses, Amex only names the Amex Graphite Business Cash Unlimited card as an option. This card launched in March 2026 and earns unlimited 2% cash-back on eligible purchases. Redemptions from that card now go into an Amex Business Checking account, also available at face value.

Other redemption options, such as statement credits and Amazon checkout, are still available if you prefer those.

How To Redeem

Amex says app support is coming, but it isn’t live yet, so redemptions are only available on the Amex website right now.

Follow these steps to make a redemption:

  1. Log in to your American Express account online.
  2. Select your eligible cash-back card and go to your Reward Dollars balance.
  3. Choose the option to redeem rewards for a deposit into your Amex HYSA or Business Checking account.
  4. Enter the amount of Reward Dollars you want to redeem.
  5. Review your selection and then confirm.

Is This Actually a Better Way To Redeem Rewards?

For most people, it’s no better or worse than existing options.

American Express Reward Dollars were already worth $1 each as a statement credit. If you take a statement credit and move the same amount of cash into whatever savings account you’re looking at, you end up in the same spot.

This new redemption setting just skips a step for convenience.

That step might matter, though. If you already have an Amex HYSA, sending cash-back straight to savings keeps it from blending into your credit card balance or being spent elsewhere. Some people will save more simply because the money shows up in a place that doesn’t feel easy to spend — and then sits there earning interest.

The lack of a minimum redemption amount is also nice.

The interest rate is a real downside, though. Amex pays an acceptable APY, but it isn’t near the top of the market. If you redeem $500 in cash back at 3.20% APY, you’ll earn about $16 in interest over a year. Competitors offer more, and that’s worth considering.

Another downside is the lack of a feature most people will really want: automatic redemptions. American Express says it plans to add this option in 2027. Until that still unknown date, you’ll have to redeem manually.

It’s also worth being clear about a likely reason why Amex enabled this new redemption option.

Corey Timlin, American Express’ senior vice president of consumer banking, said most of the company’s deposits come from people who already have its cards. Making it easier to move rewards into Amex savings keeps more of that money at Amex, rather than being withdrawn into accounts at competing banks.

Final Thoughts

This is a convenience feature, not a value boost for anyone earning Reward Dollars from their American Express card.

If you already have an Amex HYSA, moving your Reward Dollars into that account is easy and costs you nothing. If you don’t have one, this isn’t a reason enough to open one. After all, a statement credit plus a transfer to a higher-paying account gets you the same overall result with a bit more interest at the end of the year.
