If you enjoy skiing and have a passion for the slopes of Colorado, you’ll be excited to hear that Amtrak has announced the return of its popular Winter Park Express train for the winter 2024-25 season, making it easy for you if you’d rather skip the car rental.

Here’s everything you need to know about the return of the “ski train” for the winter ski season.

Colorado’s Ski Train Is Back, With One-Way Tickets From $19

Amtrak’s beloved Colorado ski train is back for another season. This year, the rail company is kicking things off earlier than normal and offering more days of service to meet the growing demand.

The Amtrak Winter Park Express will operate from December 20 to 22; December 27 to 29, 2024; and January 3 to 5, 2025. Beginning January 9, expanded service will operate Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays until March 31, 2025.

This represents a total of 69 round-trips, which is an increase of 29 trips from last winter’s ski season.

The Winter Park Express connects Denver – Union Station (DEN) and Winter Park Resort (WPR), with an additional stop in Fraser-Winter Park (WIP).

Here is the service schedule:

  • Depart Union Station at 7 a.m.; arrive at Winter Park Resort at 9:11 a.m.
  • Depart Winter Park Resort at 4:35 p.m.; arrive at Union Station at 7:05 p.m.

Fares start at $19 ($9.50 for kids) one-way and can be booked at Amtrak.com/WinterParkExpress and the Amtrak app.

“The Winter Park Express is a great opportunity for Coloradoans and visitors to explore our mountains without the hassle of driving or traffic,” Colorado Governor Jared Polis said. “Now with expanded service and lower costs, Coloradans can save time and money on our way to enjoying our great outdoors.”

The scenic train boasts a bi-level Sightseer Lounge, perfect for taking in the breathtaking mountain views. It is an excellent alternative to renting a car, offering a more picturesque and sustainable route to the slopes.

Bottom Line:

This ski season, Amtrak will run the well-known Winter Park Express from Denver to Winter Park Resort, commonly called the “ski train,” featuring additional round-trips and an extended schedule through March 31, 2025. The cost for this picturesque train journey will begin at a reasonable $19 each way.

Final Thoughts

Amtrak’s famous “ski train,” the Winter Park Express, will operate from Denver to Winter Park Resort with an expanded timetable and additional round-trips this season. If you want to avoid renting a car on your ski trip to Colorado, you can book this scenic train service to the slopes. Fares start at just $19 each way.
