We’re Halfway Through 2026, and Alaska’s Biggest Atmos Rewards Promise Still Hasn’t Launched

When Alaska Airlines launched Atmos Rewards in August 2025, it came with a bold promise that was supposed to set the program apart from every other airline loyalty program on the planet.

Alaska said members would eventually be able to choose how they earn elite status. Well, 10 months later, we’re still waiting for this feature to launch.

Now that we’re halfway through 2026, we have to ask: What’s going on with Atmos Rewards?

What Alaska Airlines Promised When Atmos Rewards Launched

In August 2025, Alaska combined Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles into Atmos Rewards, and the launch announcement was ambitious. The plan was to let members choose how they earn points and elite status when they fly. Alaska called it “a first for any global airline.”

Members would pick from 3 earning methods: distance traveled (1 point per mile flown), price paid (5 points per $1 spent), or segments flown (a flat 500 points per segment), with the option to change once per year.

This wasn’t buried in a footnote. It was in the summary bullets at the top of the announcement — the thing Alaska wanted you to walk away excited about.

Atmos Rewards Launched. It’s Biggest Feature Didn’t.

That said, Atmos Rewards has delivered in many other ways. Elite bonus earning is now in place, with Silver members earning 25% more base points, Gold 50%, Platinum 100%, and Titanium 150%, regardless of which earning method they eventually choose.

Status holders now get access to Hawaiian Airlines lounges. Most notably, Alaska’s top-tier Atmos Titanium members are the only U.S. airline elites to receive complimentary day-of-departure upgrades into global business class for themselves and a companion, with no points or certificates required.

Additionally, the upgrade priority queue was adjusted to give Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite^® cardholders with status a leg up. New ways to earn status points launched January 1, 2026, including 1 status point per $1 spent on hotels, cars, and cruises booked through Alaska and Hawaiian Vacations, 1 status point per $1 spent on Lyft, and uncapped status point earning on Atmos credit cards. HawaiianMiles members fully transitioned into Atmos Rewards on October 1, 2025.

Alaska has launched real updates. But the biggest one — choice-based earning — still hasn’t arrived.

Why the Delay Matters

And that’s what makes this delay worth discussing. We’re at the midpoint of 2026, and the practical window for choice-based earning to matter this year has likely already closed. Members make strategic decisions at the start of the year, including which flights to book and which program to credit. Some held off booking flights entirely, waiting to see what the earning structure would look like before deciding whether to credit it to Atmos Rewards or American Airlines AAdvantage. Others flew without attaching a rewards number at all, keeping their options open.

That’s real behavior driven by a promise that hasn’t been fulfilled.

Even if Alaska announced choice earnings tomorrow, anyone who flew January through June already has their points posted under distance earnings. You can’t retroactively recalculate. A launch now effectively means this feature applies to 2027, not 2026. But the feature isn’t even launching now; we still don’t know when it will.

We reached out to Alaska’s PR team and asked about the status of choice-based earning. The response, received June 25, was “Great question! Those features — Communities and Choice — are still on track to be out this year. We will have more to share soon.”

No timeline. No explanation for the delay. While Alaska’s response addressed both Choice and Communities together, Choice is the feature members have been waiting for most. Communities — which are member groups built around shared interests or affiliations that can unlock additional perks and earning opportunities — is a nice addition, but Choice is the feature that was designed to let travelers choose how they earn points and elite status. It’s the promise that set Atmos Rewards apart from every other airline loyalty program. Nearly 10 months after launch, “more to share soon” leaves that timeline as uncertain as ever.

They’re the engaged ones who paid close attention to the announcement and factored it into their loyalty strategy. Those are also the members most likely to notice when a highly anticipated feature takes longer than expected to arrive.

Final Thoughts

There’s no question Atmos Rewards has introduced meaningful improvements over Alaska’s previous loyalty program. But the feature that was supposed to make it historic — the ability to choose how you earn — is still missing, and Alaska hasn’t given us a concrete timeline.
