Avelo Airlines, a relatively new low-cost airline will be adding service from Central Oregon’s Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) to Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in California.
While the airport in the heart of California’s famous wine region is served with flights from Portland — Oregon’s largest city — Avelo will be the only carrier to offer nonstop flights to Santa Rosa from central Oregon.
Flight Details
This flight is unique in that it will only operate 2 days a week, on Mondays and Fridays. This schedule presumably was conceived to appeal to passengers heading down to the wine region, and then back again, for a long weekend.
Flights will be operated by a Boeing 737 aircraft as of June 23, 2023, according to the following schedule:
Depart Redmond (RDM) 3:00 p.m. — Arrive Santa Rosa (STS) 4:35 p.m.
Depart Santa Rosa (STS) 5:15 p.m. — Arrive Redmond (RDM) 6:45 p.m.
If you’re not familiar with Santa Rosa, it’s about an hour’s drive from both Napa and Sonoma (though the entire region is scattered with wineries), making it the most convenient airport for exploring all the region has to offer. The town of Santa Rosa is great, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops, and many people use it as a home base for exploring other smaller towns in the area.
Santa Rosa airport is about a 20- to 30-minute drive north of Santa Rosa itself, and is incredibly small, with mostly regional jets coming in and out.
Fares are available for purchase now and start at an incredible $39 one-way.
Avelo is a low-cost carrier, so pretty much every other service with your ticket comes with a fee, including seat assignments and bag charges. For example, to sit in a seat with extra legroom, you could pay a whopping $64 on top of your $39 ticket. This is steep for such a short flight.
Hot Tip:
Santa Rosa Airport is very small, so if you need additional services like car rental, be sure to make those reservations early.
Final Thoughts
While this flight will only operate 2 times per week, it’s nice to see Avelo’s expansion into smaller markets. It provides a great opportunity for those in central Oregon to visit the Napa Valley region at a great price.
