Avelo, the low-cost carrier that launched in Burbank, California, in 2021, will stop flying on the West Coast by the end of 2025.

This is surprising news, not least of all for customers whose flights will be canceled and those who will likely lose their jobs in the process. Here’s what you need to know about Avelo exiting the West Coast.

Avelo’s West Coast Network

Avelo first launched on the West Coast with flights out of Burbank (BUR) in southern California back in 2021. That Burbank hub supports all of the airline’s West Coast operations and is home to 3 of the carrier’s planes.

Presently, Avelo flies to several cities in California and Oregon, plus 1 destination each in Washington, Montana, and Nevada.

However, affected personnel started receiving emails earlier today, and rumors swirled online, as first reported by Ishrion Aviation. Now, a spokesperson for the airline has confirmed that Avelo is shuttering its Burbank hub as of December 2, 2025, including reductions in flights between August 12 and that date.

After careful consideration, Avelo is closing its base at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) later this year. On August 12, 2025, we will reduce our BUR operation to one aircraft before exiting the remaining aircraft on December 2, 2025, and closing the base.

This was not an easy decision. Our company’s deepest operational roots are in BUR, having launched our first flight there over four years ago during the COVID pandemic. There is rarely one singular reason why decisions like this are made, and this one is no different. We believe the continuation service from BUR in the current operating environment will not deliver adequate financial returns in a highly competitive backdrop. The aircraft in BUR are expected to support growth in our East Coast bases, where we have significantly more opportunity to continue our path to sustainable cash flow generation.

However, not all of Avelo’s flights on the West Coast run through Burbank. What about flights between Las Vegas (LAS) and Salem, Oregon (SLE), for example?

The same spokesperson confirmed that all Avelo flights on the West Coast will end. That’s because the 3 “BUR-based planes facilitate all the flying on the West Coast.” With those moving to the East Coast, none of the flights to these other destinations will continue.

Thus, Avelo will completely exit cities like Redmond and Eugene in Oregon and Arcata and Santa Rosa in California.

Avelo has been in the news a lot this year, announcing it wouldn’t fly on Tuesdays this summer since those tend to lose money. The airline has also seen massive backlash due to its involvement in deportation flights from the U.S. While we don’t know specifics, it seems that multiple factors led the airline to make the decision to focus solely on East Coast flying.

What Should Affected Passengers Do?

If you have an affected flight with Avelo, you’re entitled to a refund when your flight is canceled or the schedule is changed significantly. For example, if you’re set to fly on a Wednesday and Avelo will now only operate flights to your destination on Saturday, that’s a significant change.

The best way to receive a refund for West Coast flights is the “Manage Trips” section of Avelo’s website. Here, passengers can cancel their flights and choose to receive a full refund to their original method of payment.

Hot Tip:

Avelo also offers future travel credit when canceling a flight. If you’re based on the West Coast, this might not be useful, so be sure to accept a refund to your original payment method.

Final Thoughts

In a major shakeup, Avelo will completely exit the West Coast when it closes its Burbank hub in early December. Between now and then, Avelo will scale down its western operations and move aircraft to the East Coast to support those flights. Passengers affected by this development are eligible for refunds.
