Famous for its authentic onboard cuisine, extremely comfortable seats, and exceptional customer service, Japan Airlines offers one of the best experiences in the sky — regardless of the cabin you travel in.

But if you are looking to arrive in Japan in comfort and style, we found award availability from the U.S. to Tokyo starting at just 60,000 miles in business class.

This is a great price on an excellent airline — let’s take a look at the details.

Japan Airlines Award Alert — The Details

Thanks to its incredible mix of culture, food, fashion, and more, Tokyo continues to be one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Fortunately for you, we found a fresh batch of Japan Airlines business class award seats, so you can get there comfortably.

We are seeing availability from several U.S. cities. Here’s how much it will cost and how you can book:

  • Class: Business
  • Route: Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA) to Tokyo, Japan (NRT)
  • Cost: As few as 60,000 miles
  • Travel dates: August and September 2025
  • Award seats: Up to 5 passengers per route

American Airlines has an award calendar, letting you see a month’s worth of availability at a time. However, using a tool like Seats.aero lets you see multiple months and multiple routes at once, which can help you zero in on availability.

Here’s an example of an itinerary from Chicago (ORD), which you can book for as few as 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles and enjoy 14+ hours of lie-flat business class to Tokyo on Japan Airlines.

If you’re on the West Coast, tickets are available from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA), and they are bookable for the same 60,000 miles one-way in business class.

If you don’t feel like spending all of those miles, you can book seats in economy for just 35,000 miles each way, though availability will depend on the date.

No matter which cabin you choose, the JAL experience will be far better than any option on a U.S. carrier.

Just note that American Airlines flights may be available also, so be sure to look for “Operated by Japan Airlines” in small print under the flight numbers.

How To Book

There are plenty of ways to earn American AAdvantage miles to redeem for flights with American Airlines or any of the Oneworld alliance partners, such as Japan Airlines.

American Airlines has co-branded credit cards available through Citi and Barclays, and you can transfer Citi ThankYou Points to AA at a 1:1 ratio if you have an eligible Citi credit card. Additionally, you can earn Marriott Bonvoy points and transfer those to American Airlines at a rate of 3:1.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve always wanted to visit Japan and have some points and miles available, this is an excellent chance to travel in luxury.

Flying in business class on a long, international flight is one of the best uses of your hard-earned points. Redeeming for Japan Airlines flights — especially in business class — is a great way to use them, though, as it’s one of our favorite airlines and cash prices can cost thousands of dollars.

These seats won’t be available for long. If you’re interested, run — don’t walk — to start booking.
