Oakland’s (OAK) quirkiest route is about to take wing once again.

Portuguese carrier SATA Azores Airlines will start flying nonstop from Oakland to Terceira Airport (TER) in the Azores starting today, June 14, 2023.

“We welcome the return of this SATA Azores Airlines this summer,” said Craig Simon, acting director of aviation for the Port of Oakland. “We know that Bay Area travelers truly value and look forward to this special international service that allows tourists and family to easily visit the amazing and unique Azores.”

Let’s take a look at the details of California’s most interesting and unique route.

You Can Now Fly Nonstop From Oakland to the Azores

Those wishing to adventure to the Azores on this seasonal route from Oakland will be able to do so through September 20, 2023.

The once-weekly service to the Portuguese Archipelago is scheduled to operate at the following times:

  • Depart Oakland (OAK) 1:45 p.m. — Arrive Terceira (TER) 6:45 a.m. (+1)
  • Depart Terceira (TER) 12 p.m. — Arrive Oakland (OAK) 4:15 p.m.

With the addition of its Terceira to Oakland service, the small airline will operate a total of just 5 services to North America.

Other than SATA Air Azores’ seasonal venture west, the airline’s focus is primarily on the east, with its nonstop services to Boston (BOS), Montréal (YUL), New York (JFK), and Toronto (YYZ).

SATA is leasing an Airbus A330 from Spanish carrier Plus Ultra to operate its route from Terceira to The Bay Area.

Plus Ultra’s A330 jet comprises a total of 299 seats and features a small ‘business class’ cabin with just 24 seats. The seats, however, are not lie-flat. Rather, they boast an increased pitch at 56 inches (142 centimeters).

Tickets for the route are on sale now over on SATA’s website.

Final Thoughts

This seasonal route offered by SATA connecting Oakland — a hub for predominantly low-cost airlines operating domestic routes — with a tiny Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean is certainly up there with one of the most unique services operating this summer.
