The Las Vegas Strip will look quite a bit different in a few years.

Soon after the closure of the former Tropicana resort on the Strip, Bally’s Corporation has proposed a plan for a new mega-complex that will house hotels, a casino, multiple entertainment venues, and even a professional baseball stadium.

Here’s a look at everything you need to know.

Bally’s Proposes Mega-Development in Las Vegas

In 2024, the Tropicana Las Vegas closed its doors after 67 years of operation. While some may have been nostalgic about losing an iconic Las Vegas Strip institution, Bally’s Corporation wasted no time putting together a plan for the site after the Tropicana was demolished. Its plans encompass a prime piece of real estate adjacent to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) on the south end of the Strip.

If all goes to plan, construction on Bally’s Las Vegas is expected to commence in the first half of 2026. When complete, it will incorporate the new stadium for the MLB’s Athletics, which left their previous home in Oakland, California, in 2024 and will move to Las Vegas once the stadium is complete.

Elsewhere on the 35-acre site, visitors will find 2 luxury hotel towers (it’s unclear at this point who will operate them) offering a total of 3,000 rooms, a 2,500-seat venue, more than 500,000 square feet of retail, dining, and entertainment space, a casino, and a “VIP experience with direct access to the ballpark,” according to a press release from Bally’s.

These plans reflect a shift in visitor desires in Las Vegas. Just a couple of decades ago, the main draw to the city was unquestionably gambling; however, visitors’ tastes have changed more recently, resulting in Las Vegas relying less on gambling and more on entertainment experiences to draw crowds to the Strip each week.

Part of that shift has been drawing professional sports teams. The National Hockey League entered the market in 2017 with the Vegas Golden Knights, followed by the WNBA with the Las Vegas Aces in 2018, and the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020.

Sports (and sports betting) is big business, and Las Vegas has leveraged that to ensure visitors keep spending money on and around the Strip, even as gambling in casinos becomes less popular. The proposal for Bally’s Las Vegas, which combines gambling, entertainment, and professional sports in a single mega-development, reflects the future Las Vegas envisions for itself — one that doesn’t rely solely on gambling, but rather a mix of different entertainment options to keep visitors coming back for more.

Final Thoughts

Las Vegas is transforming once again, and this new proposal for a mega-development from Bally’s at the site of the former Tropicana is at the forefront. As the project moves through the approvals process and toward the construction phase, we’ll certainly learn a lot more, hopefully including who will operate the hotels. When we do, we’ll be sure to update all of you!
