Just yesterday, Bilt officially pulled back the curtain on its new credit card lineup, marking a major shift away from Wells Fargo and toward Cardless as its new issuing partner. The rollout was positioned as a customer-friendly evolution — one that was painted as being painless for existing cardholders.

However, within hours of the announcement, early data points began surfacing across Reddit, FlyerTalk, and credit-focused forums suggesting that the transition may not be going as smoothly as promised.

The most surprising part? These reports aren’t coming from new applicants. They’re coming from existing Bilt Mastercard (discontinued as of February 7, 2026) holders — people who already have an open Bilt account, are in good standing, and were told the upgrade process would not involve a hard credit inquiry. Despite that, some are reporting outright denials when attempting to transition to the new Cardless-issued Bilt card.

So … what’s actually happening here?

Existing Bilt Cardholders Unexpectedly Denied for Conversions

Bilt has been clear in its messaging that this transition was designed to be frictionless. According to the company, eligible cardholders can opt in to apply for one of the 3 new credit cards, keep earning points uninterrupted, and move forward without a hard pull on their credit.

Yet online posts tell a different story.

On Reddit’s r/CreditCards and r/BiltRewards, users have shared screenshots of denial messages and vague rejection explanations. One user wrote: “I’ve had the Bilt card for over a year, never missed a payment, and was just denied for the new version. The message said ‘unable to verify credit profile.’”

Another common theme popping up is credit bureau issues — specifically, Innovis. Several users report denial reasons along the lines of “no Innovis credit file found,” which is notable since Innovis is not a bureau most consumers monitor regularly.

FlyerTalk threads echo similar experiences, with long-time cardholders expressing confusion about how they could be declined for a card they’re effectively already using. One member summarized the sentiment bluntly: “This was supposed to be a migration, not a new application. Something’s clearly off.”

To be clear, this does not appear to be universal. Many users are reporting successful transitions, reinforcing the idea that the process can work as intended. But the early volume of denial data points suggests underwriting or data-matching issues are affecting a subset of otherwise qualified customers.

What Can You Do if You Were Rejected?

If you were unexpectedly denied, you’re not necessarily out of options. However, you may need patience.

First, this does not appear to be a hard “burn the bridge” denial. Based on user reports, some denials appear tied to missing or incomplete credit bureau data, rather than poor creditworthiness. That means reapplying later may be possible, especially if Cardless resolves backend issues.

Second, Bilt has provided support channels. Affected users report being directed to contact Bilt support through the app or via email at support@biltrewards.com. While response times vary, several users say support has at least acknowledged the issue.

At this stage, there is no dedicated reconsideration phone number for the Cardless-issued Bilt cards. Calling Wells Fargo won’t help, as this isn’t the issuer of the new cards, and Wells Fargo isn’t controlling the changeover to Cardless.

Most importantly, you are not forced to close your existing Wells Fargo–issued Bilt Card immediately. Bilt has indicated that current cards will continue to function during the transition window, until February 6, giving cardholders time to decide next steps.

Final Thoughts

Bilt set out to deliver “the smoothest credit card transition possible,” and for many users, that’s exactly what’s happening. But early reports make it clear that the experience isn’t universally seamless.

When existing cardholders — especially those who were told no hard inquiry would occur — start seeing unexpected denials, it raises fair questions about underwriting logic, credit bureau dependencies, and rollout readiness.

If you’re affected, the best move right now is to pause, avoid repeat applications in quick succession, and contact Bilt support directly. This story is still developing, and given the noise already surfacing less than 24 hours after the launch announcement, it’s one we’ll be watching closely. There will likely be more reports of unexpected denials between now and January 30, the final date to make a decision on your existing Bilt credit card.
