British Airways has quietly made changes to how Avios are awarded when flying Aer Lingus and Japan Airlines — and it could mean more points in your pocket, depending on the fare you book.

Let’s take a closer look to these updates.

Avios Earnings Get a Boost on Aer Lingus and Japan Airlines

British Airways has updated its Avios earnings charts for partner flights on Aer Lingus and Japan Airlines, as first reported by Loyalty Lobby.

For Aer Lingus, the new chart took effect on September 1, 2025, and it applies to all flights. While earning percentages remain the same for existing fare classes, several new fare buckets have been added, meaning more travelers can now earn Avios when flying Aer Lingus.

Here are the updated earning rates on Aer Lingus flights:

The British Airways Club program hasn’t boosted earning percentages on Aer Lingus flights themselves but has broadened eligibility, letting some of its lowest economy discounted fares earn Avios for the fist time.

For Japan Airlines (JAL), the changes were officially implemented on April 1, 2025, but only updated publicly on British Airways’ website this week. The adjustments apply to international flights only, with no changes to earnings on JAL’s domestic routes.

These updates are especially significant for passengers in premium economy, business, and first class, who will now earn substantially more Avios than before when crediting a paid JAL flight into their British Airways account.

On top of these improvements, JAL flights credited to British Airways Club also qualify for The Club elite bonus Avios, making the updates even more rewarding. Additionally, now that JAL premium cabins earn significantly more, this makes British Airways Club a far stronger option for where to credit your long-haul flights to maximize earnings.

Hot Tip:

If you’re booking Japan Airlines in premium economy or higher, make sure your British Airways Club loyalty number is added to your ticket. You could be earning double (or more) Avios than what you got using the old rates.

Final Thoughts

There wasn’t a formal announcement from British Airways about these updates, but they’re largely positive for Avios enthusiasts. Aer Lingus flyers now have more eligible fare classes for earning British Airways Avios, while JAL passengers — especially those in premium cabins — will see their earnings climb considerably.

For frequent travelers, this is a great reminder to double-check earning charts before traveling so you can maximize every mile flown by crediting your paid flights to the most rewarding program available.
