The $300 Capital One Travel credit on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is one of my favorite card perks. I love that you can use the credit for flights or hotels, making it a versatile benefit. However, to get the most out of the credit, I always use it the same way: booking Capital One Premier Collection Hotels.

Capital One Travel launched its Premier Collection Hotels in 2023, and I’m able to get massive value from the credit by booking luxury hotels that aren’t part of major loyalty programs. This way, I get amazing perks during my stay, plus a $300 discount.

Here’s how I get the most out of this lucrative credit card perk.

Capital One Miles

Cardholders earn 10x Capital One miles on all Premier Collection bookings and also get the following benefits:

  • $100 experience credit (varies by hotel)
  • Complimentary breakfast for 2
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Room upgrade (when available)
  • Early check-in and late checkout (when available)
Hot Tip:

To get the benefits, you have to book through Capital One Travel (or Capital One Business Travel) in the cardholder’s name with the cardholder listed as a member of the traveling party. Certain hotels may require a minimum number of nights in order for you to receive the benefits.

Rates Are Often Similar Through Capital One Travel

I always check on the hotel’s website first to see if rates are similar. If there’s a massive difference (like $100 per night), I book directly through the hotel’s website and save my credit for another time.

In my experience, prices often vary by about $5 to $10 per night, so if I book through Capital One Travel and use my credit (and get the Premier Collection benefits), I come out on top. In a few situations, it’s actually been cheaper to book via Capital One Travel, even without applying the credit.

Hot Tip:

I suggest comparing prices to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal. I start by checking the price to book directly, comparing it to Capital One Travel, AmexTravel.com, Citi Travel, and Chase Travel, and checking Rakuten or shopping portals to see if I can get extra points by clicking through to an online travel agency like Booking.com.

Why Premier Collection Is Ideal for Independent Hotels

If a hotel is part of Hyatt, Marriott, IHG, Accor, or Hilton, I usually book directly with the hotel to earn points and get elite status benefits. Although the hotel might recognize elite status if you book through Capital One Premier Collection or other luxury travel credit cards (like via Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or Chase’s The Edit), it’s not a guarantee.

Where it really comes in handy is for hotels not part of major hotel loyalty programs, or at least ones where I don’t hold status or don’t care about earning points. Because Premier Collection hotels offer benefits similar to those of high-level elite status (such as room upgrades and free breakfast), my stay can feel decadent without having to qualify for status.

My Recent Experience: Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort

My latest Premier Collection stay reminded me why I absolutely love using my $300 Capital One Travel credit from my Capital One Venture X card for these hotels. I had an incredibly peaceful and comfortable stay at a hotel I’d been wanting to check out for a while: Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort.

Anantara Riverside Resort Bangkok
I was so excited to stay at Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, on the banks of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River.

Rates were about $10 more per night booking through Capital One Travel’s Premier Collection for a deluxe river-view room, but given the coveted perks, I didn’t mind.

I spent about $1,000 for a 4-night stay, and after applying my $300 credit, it came out to about $700, or $175 per night. It’s true that Anantara has its own loyalty program, but it’s not one I’m especially invested in, so booking this way was ideal.

I could have stayed at much cheaper hotels in Bangkok — on average, luxury hotel stays can be as low as $90 per night in the city. That said, I had wanted to stay at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort for its amenities: Thai-inspired decor and service, the riverfront location, a well-stocked gym, a kids club with lots of interesting activities for my son, and a large pool with a swim-up bar.

Once I factored in everything we received during our stay, the value went far beyond the $300 credit.

Free Breakfast for 3 Guests

Technically, the free breakfast perk is for 2 guests, but the hotel included my 5-year-old son in the perk, giving all of us breakfast for free. This was one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had, complete with egg stations, noodle stations, even an Indian section with a chef preparing dosas — and it was well worth it.

Breakfast Anantara Riverside Resort
My freshly prepared dosa and omelet were delicious.

Daily breakfast was about $32 per person, so I estimate I saved $384 for my 3-person family during my 4-night stay with this benefit. Plus, we filled up on breakfast around 10 a.m. each day, so we ate less at lunch, and therefore saved quite a bit on food during our trip.

Our Gorgeous, Upgraded Room

I booked a deluxe river-view room but was upgraded to a fancier deluxe riverfront room, and they added an extra bed for my son at no extra charge (normally about $50 nightly), saving me an additional $200.

The room was extremely quiet, with a comfortable king-size bed and blackout shades, which was just what I needed after a nearly 24-hour, sleepless journey between Madrid (MAD) and Bangkok (BKK) with a long layover in Hong Kong (HKG).

I loved waking up each morning to the glittering sunshine on the river and sitting outside in the evenings, watching the party boats glide by. Bangkok is a busy, hectic city, and coming “home” each day to the calm, riverfront location was just what I needed.

Anantara Riverfront Resort Chao Phraya
The Chao Phraya River is one of Bangkok’s most peaceful spots.

The room smelled lightly of lemongrass (this scent wafted throughout the entire hotel, and it was perfect). I appreciated that the bathroom was spacious and featured a big soaking tub, a rainfall shower, and a separate toilet. Each morning, the room was meticulously cleaned while I was at breakfast, and we received turndown service every evening.

Hotel Amenities Added Even More Value

My son was obsessed with the kids club, which offered hourly activities — art projects, kids fitness, and more. I honestly received hours of free childcare thanks to this amenity (and not many hotels in Bangkok have kids clubs). Plus, my son made friends from Macao, Singapore, and Germany. A happy kid means happy parents!

I spent time at the hotel wandering the lush grounds and breathing in the lemongrass scent. Elephant statues and figures were everywhere, and they fit right into the greenery and Thai-inspired decor.

The hotel also offered free, hourly riverboat service to the massive Iconsiam shopping center and food market, and Saphan Taksin (where we could catch the BTS Silom line and head to spots like Lumpini Park). This saved us money on taxis and ride-shares, and we loved cruising the river on balmy Bangkok days and nights.

Anantara Riverside Resort Bangkok Riverboats
We took advantage of the free boat service once or twice daily.

The pool was a prime hangout spot, with a swim-up bar and a shallow kiddie section. The hotel also had a Ping-Pong table, which provided endless entertainment for my son.

My husband and I worked off our jet lag at the gym, which was large and offered classes like Pilates reformer classes and morning ice-bath plunges.

And although I didn’t use the spa (I preferred to head off-site for Thai massages), it looked like a great place to rejuvenate.

Late Check-In and Checkout

I didn’t take advantage of late check-in because I didn’t arrive until early evening, but I was offered late checkout. We had a car scheduled for around noon to take us to our next destination (Khao Yai), but it was nice to have been offered the option.

Resort Restaurant Credit

I was able to use the $100 resort credit at any restaurant on the property, including the pool bar, and apply it as needed. Because food is pretty affordable in Bangkok, this covered a few family lunches at the pool bar. It allowed us to snack at the resort, and we’d usually head out for street food in the evening.

Thanks to the free breakfast and resort credit, I barely spent any money on food in Bangkok, making the trip extremely affordable.

Final Thoughts

While I always recommend comparing prices before booking, using my $300 Capital One Travel credit for Premier Collection hotels made my Bangkok trip more affordable and memorable. I earned 7,000 Capital One miles for the stay, saved money by using the credit, and got benefits that made my trip more comfortable and much cheaper.

While it depends on your style and exact plans, using the credit to book a Premier Collection hotel in a destination where money goes further, like Bangkok, can really help with the budget. I got my money’s worth on this trip, and I can’t wait to find the perfect Premier Collection hotel for next year’s credit.
