Chase’s Ink Business cards have always been top picks for small-business owners — great earning rates, zero-to-nominal annual fees, and surprisingly flexible welcome offer rules.

But something new is popping up, and it suggests those days might be changing. In fact, a few recent applications are showing a message many of us haven’t seen from Chase before.

Let’s dive into the details.

Chase Is Now Warning Applicants About Lifetime Eligibility on Ink Bonuses

A recent data point posted on Reddit — from a user applying for the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card — shows a new message appearing during the application process:

A quick update about your application. It looks like you’re not eligible for a bonus for a Chase Ink Business Cash credit card. This can happen if you currently have this card or have had it previously. Customers who are applying for a Chase Business card without an annual fee or who have held this card are also ineligible.

In other words, Chase is now grouping all no-annual-fee Ink Business cards under the same eligibility umbrella. So, as this new pop-up reads, if you’ve ever had any of these no-annual-fee Ink products, Chase may block you from earning another welcome bonus offer.

This approach feels very similar to what American Express has been doing for years. Amex famously screens applications — affectionately known as “pop-up jail” by many credit card enthusiasts — and displays a warning if you’re not eligible for a welcome offer, giving you the choice to continue or exit. Chase seems to be moving in that same direction, at least for certain Ink applications.

According to the Reddit user, Chase then presented 2 options:

  1. Proceed without receiving a welcome offer.
  2. Cancel the application altogether without any impact on their credit score.

Additionally, similar lifetime restriction wording — “The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you have ever had this card” — is now appearing on some Ink cards with annual fees as well, like the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card with a $95 annual fee.

What we’re unsure of at this point is how aggressively Chase is enforcing this new policy. We don’t yet know whether this rule applies to every applicant or only in certain situations. But if it applies to you, at least you’ll be warned before applying for cards like the Ink Business Cash card or the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card.

Hot Tip:

If you’re considering a new Ink Business card, apply only when you’re confident you’re eligible for the welcome offer. If the pop-up appears, you can safely exit the application without affecting your credit.

Final Thoughts

Chase adding lifetime-style language to Ink Business cards is a meaningful shift for one of the most popular small-business card lineups. While we don’t yet know how consistently this rule will be enforced, prospective applicants should be prepared — and pay close attention to any bonus warnings that appear during the application process.
