The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has long been one of the best entry-level travel rewards cards on the market, thanks in part to a strong welcome offer, solid bonus categories, and a few benefits that punch above the card’s $95 annual fee.

One of those benefits has been the 10% anniversary points bonus — a small but appreciated perk that rewards cardholders for simply sticking around.

Rumors began swirling after some users saw a message in their accounts that the perk was being discontinued. Then the message disappeared, leaving cardholders with questions.

Now, Chase has confirmed that this benefit is on its way out.

How the 10% Anniversary Points Bonus Works

The 10% anniversary points bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is straightforward. Each year on your card anniversary, Chase tacks on a 10% bonus calculated against the base points you earned from purchases during the previous cardmember year. The math works out to 1 bonus point for every $10 you spent on the card.

The bonus is calculated on your base spending only. Points earned through bonus category multipliers and the welcome offer don’t count toward the calculation. For example, if you put $25,000 of spend on the card during your cardmember year, you’d see 2,500 bonus points hit your account roughly 60 to 90 days after your anniversary date. It’s not a life-changing benefit, but it’s been a nice kicker for loyal cardholders since it was added back in 2021.

Chase Confirms the Points Bonus Is Going Away

Rumors started swirling after some cardholders spotted a notice in the Chase app announcing that the 10% anniversary bonus would be discontinued. The message disappeared shortly after, leaving cardholders wondering whether the change was real or a glitch.

Now, we have an answer.

Chase has confirmed that the in-app message went live earlier than expected, but the underlying news is accurate. The 10% anniversary points bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is ending on October 1, 2026.

A Chase spokesperson shared the following statement: “The benefit will be discontinued as we regularly evaluate and update our benefits based on cardmember feedback and what benefits resonate most. We look forward to sharing additional updates to the Sapphire Preferred card in the near term.”

For most cardholders, this benefit likely wasn’t the main way to overcome the card’s $95 annual fee. Unless you were putting tens of thousands of dollars of non-bonus-category spend on the card each year, the rebate was rarely the deciding factor in whether or not to keep the card. That said, losing any benefit stings — and it’s the kind of slow erosion that adds up, especially when paired with other recent changes across the Sapphire lineup.

The teaser about additional updates is worth noting. Chase has been busy reworking the Sapphire family over the past year, and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card may well be due for its own refresh. Whether that refresh offsets the loss of this perk with new value remains to be seen.

Hot Tip:

If you relied on this bonus, it’s worth looking at the other benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card to see if the annual fee still makes sense for you.

Final Thoughts

The 10% anniversary points bonus was never the headline feature of the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but it was a small “thank you” from Chase that cardholders enjoyed.

Cardmembers will keep earning it on spend through October 1, 2026, after which it’s gone for good. With Chase hinting at more changes on the way, this almost certainly won’t be the last card update we’ll be writing about this year.
