Earlier this year, Chase refreshed the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and introduced Points Boost, a new redemption feature that replaced the card’s fixed 1.5 cents-per-point travel value. At launch, Chase guaranteed a 2-cents-per-point redemption rate for hotels in its The Edit collection when booked through Chase Travel.

That guarantee has since been removed, and now Points Boost redemptions for The Edit hotels are displayed with “up to 2 cents per point” language, meaning travelers can no longer rely on a fixed value when using points for high-end hotel bookings. This means travelers might get less value than they’d originally planned for.

Here’s what you need to know about these changes.

Chase Changes Points Boost Value for Sapphire Reserve’s The Edit Hotels

When Points Boost launched in June, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders were told they could unlock enhanced redemption value when booking through Chase Travel.

At the time, Chase told cardholders:

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and you use Points Boost, your points are worth 2x when you book a hotel that’s part of The Edit℠, and up to 2x when redeemed for both thousands of other top-booked hotels and flights with select airlines through Chase Travel.

The updated terms now read:

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and you use Points Boost, your points are worth up to 2x when you book a hotel that’s part of The Edit℠, and up to 2x when redeemed for other top-booked hotels and flights with select airlines through Chase Travel.

That 2-cent-per-point-value guarantee is now gone. Now, it’s “up to” 2x.

Chase’s new program terms reflect that Points Boost redemptions at The Edit hotels are now worth up to 2 cents per point, rather than a guaranteed 2x value. Although cardholders might still extract 2 cents per point from these bookings, the removal of a fixed 2-cents-per-point redemption creates variability in redemption values where there was none previously.

The change has been implemented quietly and abruptly, potentially surprising some travelers. Historically, card issuers tended to communicate these types of changes clearly and in advance, especially when changes affect redemption value — but not this time.

It’s also worth remembering that even before Points Boost, many Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders found better value by transferring Ultimate Rewards points to Chase’s travel partners. Programs like World of Hyatt frequently deliver redemption values well above 1.5 cents per point, especially at upscale or peak-season properties.

Still, Points Boost isn’t without merit. Booking hotels through Chase Travel can allow travelers to earn both hotel points and elite night credit on eligible stays — a unique perk that isn’t typically available when booking through third-party portals.

Upgraded Points reached out to Chase for comment regarding this change but did not receive a response prior to publication.

Hot Tip:

Before using Points Boost, compare portal pricing with transfer partner options — especially Hyatt — to ensure you’re getting the best overall value for your points.

Final Thoughts

This update doesn’t drastically change the Chase Sapphire Reserve card’s value proposition, but it does remove a small yet meaningful perk that gave cardholders confidence when using Points Boost for The Edit hotel bookings.

Ultimately, flexibility remains key, and understanding program terms matters just as much as earning points.
