Different from your typical airport lounge, there’s a mostly outdoor space at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) called the Chase Sapphire Terrace. It opened in late March 2023, but this space will become public — aka, no longer a Chase property — in March 2025.

Here’s what you should know about changes to the Chase Sapphire Terrace in Austin, Texas.

Chase Sapphire Terrace Will Become Public

Documents for a November 13, 2024, meeting of the Austin (AUS) Airport Advisory Commission show plans for lounge openings and updates. Page 11 of these documents says, “The Chase Terrace Pilot Program will end March 2025.” It continues by saying that the airport is “analyzing ways to increase visibility and amenities at this location” after the space is “opened back to the public.”

The Sapphire Terrace in Austin opened on March 20, 2023, meaning its current form will end after just 2 years. Presently, the space has lounge-like amenities but mostly focuses on its outdoor terrace — which is, of course, subject to weather, which can be uncomfortably hot in Austin.

Hot Tip:

If you want to visit the Sapphire Terrace while it’s still in its current form, you can access it with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or J.P. Morgan Reserve Card.

Plans for New Lounges at AUS

Meeting documents also discuss 4 new lounge spaces coming to Austin thanks to ongoing works at the airport. While areas 1, 2, and 3 all say they will be occupied by airline lounges, option 4, the “West Infill Premium Lounge,” says it should open in 2026 or 2027 and could be leased by a financial institution. Could Chase push to open a Sapphire Lounge by The Club in this space? Potentially.

Chase now has a relationship with the airport and has shown a desire to expand its Sapphire Lounge presence. However, nothing is guaranteed.

We reached out to Chase for a comment on this developing story. As of the time of publication, we had not received a response. Now, a spokesperson for Chase has confirmed that the terrace plan was always temporary. “We’ve loved bringing our Chase Sapphire Terrace experience to life at Austin Bergstrom. As this was always a temporary activation, the space will close in March of 2025. We look forward to our cardmembers’ continued enjoyment of this space through the coming holiday season before its planned closure.”

Final Thoughts

The Chase Sapphire Terrace in Austin will cease to be a Chase-controlled space and become public in March 2025. At that time, the complimentary drinks and snacks will likely disappear. What the space will look like after Chase stops operating isn’t clear at this time, and it’s unknown whether Chase will work to secure another lounge space at AUS in the future.

The information regarding the J.P. Morgan Reserve Card was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.
