Well, that’s interesting. Bookings made via The Edit, Chase’s luxury hotel program, now earn elite status benefits and stay credits.

Let’s take a look at what this means and whether it’s worth booking this way.

What is The Edit?

Formerly known as the Luxury Hotel and Resorts Collection (LHRC), The Edit by Chase Travel is a luxury hotel program. It’s available to those with several credit cards, but this new benefit is available exclusively to those who hold the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or J.P. Morgan Reserve Card. The Edit offers perks that mimic elite status benefits. This means that when you book with The Edit, you get perks including:

  • Daily breakfast for 2
  • Room upgrade at check-in (based on availability)
  • Early check-in (based on availability)
  • Late checkout (based on availability)
  • Welcome gift
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • $100 property credit

This is similar to Amex’s Fine Hotels + Resorts and Capital One’s Premier Collection, both of which offer nearly identical benefits.

The biggest exception here is that Amex’s FHR program offers guaranteed 4:00 p.m. checkout, while The Edit’s late checkout perk is based on availability.

These perks are great to have, especially for those who don’t usually earn hotel loyalty elite status — though that might be changing with this new partnership.

Earn Elite Status Benefits and Credits

Historically, hotels have punished those who book through a third party (such as Chase Travel) by refusing to award travelers with any benefits of status or elite night credits.

It makes sense, in a way: Hotels pay third parties a commission, so they end up making less money overall. Forcing travelers to book directly with the hotel avoids sharing revenue. To incentivize this booking method, hotel programs hold your elite status benefits hostage.

Until now, there has been no officially sanctioned way to get around this, though data points have long suggested that those who book with Amex’s FHR can still get their elite status perks.

That’s why it’s such big news that Chase is adding this benefit to its site, as first reported by The Points Guy and later confirmed through Chase’s customer service by Upgraded Points writers. Although it’s only applicable to The Edit properties, the ability to earn points in your preferred hotel program on your stay is a huge boon — especially since you’ll also earn 3x points per $1 spent on these bookings with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

You’ll see tags like “Marriott Bonvoy Eligible” or “World of Hyatt Eligible” at hotels affiliated with rewards programs that are now connected to The Edit.

More than this, you can also earn points and benefits when you redeem your Chase points on a hotel stay. Since Chase lets you redeem your Ultimate Rewards through the travel portal at a rate of 1.5 cents each with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, this can be a great way to minimize out-of-pocket costs without sacrificing earnings.

It’s not yet clear how benefits will stack with those who have existing elite status. After all, do you need free breakfast if you already have the option as an elite member? Will room upgrades be doubled (like you get with Hyatt Privé and Globalist status)?

Bottom Line:

You can now redeem your Chase points for a hotel stay with The Edit, earn elite night credits, enjoy elite status benefits, get points for your stay, and still enjoy the room upgrades, property credits and breakfast that The Edit bookings receive. That’s pretty cool.

Final Thoughts

Bookings with The Edit have partnered with loyalty programs so you’ll be able to earn elite credit despite it being a third-party booking. This is great news for those chasing elite status, though it’s not yet clear how elite status benefits will mesh with the perks The Edit provides.

The information regarding the J.P. Morgan Reserve Card was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.
