Update:

Update: The changes below have now taken effect.

If you have a Citi credit card, you’re able to share your ThankYou Points with other members — instantly and without a fee. That’s a very generous, useful feature.

Unfortunately, it’s set to end after May 16. Here’s what cardholders should know about this change.

Quick Background on Sharing Citi Points

Those with a Citi credit card that earns ThankYou Points currently have a handy feature that Chase and American Express don’t offer: the ability to share your points with other members freely, regardless of who they are or whether you live together.

While Chase requires you to live at the same address to share points with other members, Citi doesn’t have that same requirement. American Express doesn’t offer any option for sending your points to another member’s account. Thus, the ability to share your Citi ThankYou Points with other members of your choosing — and do so instantly and without fees — has been very handy.

The only restriction to this feature is the fact shared points expire within 90 days. However, receiving points from a friend or family member and then sending them to Citi’s transfer partners avoids concerns about this 90-day expiration policy.

Citi Points Sharing Ends May 16

Earlier this year, Citi cardholders received a message about the end of this feature, showing on their credit card statements:

“Update to ThankYou® Rewards Point Sharing
Effective 5/17/2026, Point Sharing will no longer be offered as a ThankYou® Rewards redemption option. Additionally, you will no longer be able to receive
shared points. You can share and receive shared points until 5/16/2026.
As a reminder, shared points expire 90 days after the date they were shared.”

We reached out to Citi with questions, including whether this affects all ThankYou Points-earning cards or just some of them. A spokesperson for Citi confirmed that this affects all cards earning ThankYou Points, going into effect on May 17, 2026.

Thus, you have until May 16, 2026, to share points with other members. After that point, you won’t be able to share or receive points from other members, making it more difficult to combine your points with friends for an upcoming trip.

Final Thoughts

Starting on May 17, Citi cardholders will no longer be able to share their ThankYou Points with other members. This has been a customer-friendly, useful, and free tool that allowed members to combine points with friends and family for an upcoming redemption — or put points into the account of someone with a better credit card to unlock preferred points transfer rates or booking options in the travel portal.

For those who have ThankYou Points in their accounts, consider any sharing activity you want to take advantage of before May 16. That deadline is tomorrow.
