Credit card balances in the U.S. just hit another record. That’s good news for the banks and bad news for anyone paying interest while chase points and miles.

If you carry a balance from month to month, the rewards you’re earning almost certainly aren’t worth more than what you owe your card issuer. Here’s what the latest data shows and why the math rarely works in your favor.

Credit Card Balances Reach a New High

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York released its quarterly report on household debt and credit for the second quarter of 2026, and credit card balances climbed by $21 billion to reach $1.26 trillion. That’s a 1.7% jump in a single quarter. Total household debt now sits at $18.8 trillion.

Rising balances are not automatically a problem.

Plenty of us run everything through a card and pay it off in full to earn points on our daily spending. The concern is what happens to the people who don’t.

The New York Fed reported that 4.7% of all outstanding debt was in some stage of delinquency, and the share of credit card balances that are seriously past due has been grinding back toward levels we haven’t seen in more than a decade. When balances grow and more of them go unpaid, a lot of cardholders are handing their rewards straight back to the bank — plus a good deal more.

Why a Balance Cancels Out Your Rewards

This is the important part.

The average credit card interest rate is now around 25%, and rewards cards tend to charge the higest rates. Meanwhile, the points and miles you earn are typically worth somewhere between 1 and 1.5 cents each.

Do the math. It gets ugly fast.

Say you put $1,000 on a card earning 3 points per $1 spent, and you value those points at a generous 1.5 cents apiece. That’s 3,000 points or roughly $45 in value. Now say you carry that $1,000 balance for a year at 25%. You’d pay about $250 in interest.

You earned $45 and paid $250. That is a $205 loss on a card you were supposedly using for the rewards.

Even a card earning 5x in a bonus category cannot dig you out. Five points per $1 at 1.5 cents is a 7.5% return. A 25% interest rate squashes that several times over.

There is no welcome offer, no bonus category, and no transfer-partner sweet spot that beats paying a quarter of your balance in interest every year. The rewards game only works when you pay in full.

Final Thoughts

Points and miles are a fantastic way to travel for less, but it only works long term when you treat your credit card like a debit card and clear the balance every month.

If you’re carrying debt right now, the highest-value move you can make is not opening another card. The best move is paying that balance down or parking it on a 0% balance-transfer offer while you do. Earn rewards on money you were going to spend anyway, and never borrow to earn them.
