With so many airlines now operating narrow-body jets between the U.S. and Latin America, it’s not always easy to find well-priced lie-flat fares in business class.

That’s when Avianca steps in. There are pros and cons to flying Avianca, which we’ll discuss, but for $1,629 round-trip, this is a deal not to be ignored.

Fare Deal — Details

Upgraded Points’ Ryan Smith and I have both had subpar experiences flying Avianca’s premium cabins. Ryan had a mediocre time flying in Premium on a narrow-body Airbus A320 and rough experience flying a strangely configured Boeing 787, and mine was flying from Miami to Bogotá on the Boeing 787.

However, Avianca recently announced it would bring the proper business class experience back to 80+ routes in the Americas.

That, plus the fact alternatives in lie-flat business class cost several thousand dollars more, is what makes this a very tempting deal.

As Avianca is a member of Star Alliance, you’ll also be able to earn miles, status points, and benefit from any elite status if you add your Star Alliance member airline frequent flyer number

  • Class: Business
  • Routes: New York (JFK) to Santiago (SCL) via Bogotá (BOG)
  • Dates: September 2025 until June 2026
  • Rates: As low as $1,629 round-trip

Here’s an example of a potential booking this coming November.

The flights involve a mixture of aircraft with and without lie-flat beds. So, when presented with the options, make sure to select an itinerary where it’s marked “lie-flat seat,” such as the one below.

Best Ways To Book

The best way to find a flight itinerary for this deal is by using Google Flights’ handy “Explore” tool.

It’s also worthwhile booking directly with Avianca, rather than via a third-party booking site. While prices are sometimes cheaper, third-party sites are renowned for providing inferior customer service, especially when something goes wrong or you need to change your booking.

I’d also recommend, if possible, paying with a credit card that rewards you for booking travel. For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a firm favorite that you’ll find in most of our wallets here at Upgraded Points.

Hot Tip:

Using the Amex Platinum card will earn you 5 points per $1 spent on flights when booked through the AmexTravel.com portal or directly with the airline (up to $500,000 per year, then 1x earnings).

Final Thoughts

Avianca might not be known for providing the best business-class service in the world, but the Colombian airline for sure offers the best value for getting to South America in a lie-flat business class seat. We don’t expect these prices to last long.
