Delivery giant DoorDash is reportedly in talks to buy one of its chief rivals, Instacart.

While the move hasn’t been officially confirmed, it could be announced as soon as this week and is said to be valued at around $17 billion.

Here’s everything we know so far and what it might mean for consumers going forward.

Reports: DoorDash in Talks To Buy Instacart

The Wall Street Journal reports that DoorDash is “in advanced talks” to buy Instacart, one of its main competitors in the food-delivery industry, citing people familiar with the matter.

The deal, which the WSJ says could be finalized this week, may assign a valuation of up to $17 billion to Instacart. However, nothing is confirmed, and it’s possible a deal will never finalize.

Instacart’s primary business is grocery delivery, while DoorDash has expanded from delivering restaurant meals into the grocery space and beyond, partnering with numerous major retailers, including CVS, Kroger, Macy’s, Safeway, and more.

Of course, Instacart and DoorDash perks are important perks of many credit cards — the majority of them issued by Chase — offered today. These cards offer complimentary paid memberships, recurring delivery credits, and more, depending on the platform and the specific card.

If a deal between DoorDash and Instacart goes through, it will have implications for cardholders, though we’re too early in the process to know what that will look like. Maybe the Instacart brand remains intact and nothing changes. On the other hand, Instacart could be completely folded under the DoorDash brand, and cards with Instacart perks would have to amend their offerings in the future.

For now, though, nothing changes, and cardholders can continue to use the DoorDash and Instacart perks they’re entitled to as normal.

Final Thoughts

While nothing is final, it appears DoorDash is close to buying Instacart, one of its biggest competitors. The move would give DoorDash dominance in the grocery delivery space, improving its already robust offering.

What this means for cardholders with DoorDash and/or Instacart perks remains unclear at this time, as the deal hasn’t been confirmed . However, if and when it does, we’ll begin to learn more about the future of these card benefits and will keep this story updated with all of the latest information as we learn it.
