Emirates Skywards has one of the airline industry’s most unique mileage expiration policies. Your miles expire based on your birth month, rather than a straightforward date tied to when you earned them.

However, that unusual system is going away June 1, 2027. Here’s what’s changing and what it means for your balance.

The Birthday Month Rule That Skywards Uses Currently

Presently, Emirates Skywards miles are valid for 3 years from the date they’re earned. However, it’s more nuanced than that. They’re removed at the end of your birth month during the year they’re scheduled to expire.

The Skywards terms state: “Your Skywards Miles are valid for three years from the date of travel. Within the calendar year that Skywards Miles are due to expire, they will be removed from your account at the end of the month in which you were born.”

That means 2 people taking the same flight can have dramatically different expiration dates. A January 2023 flight would produce miles expiring February 28, 2026, for someone born in February but expire on December 31, 2026, for someone with a December birthday.

Emirates has confirmed that miles remain valid through the end of your birth month even when that month comes before the month you traveled, provided 3 years have passed. Someone born in January who flew in February 2022, for example, gets until January 31, 2026, to use those miles.

Unlike many loyalty programs, earning or redeeming miles doesn’t reset the expiration clock. The exceptions are holding a co-branded Skywards credit card or having Skywards Platinum status.

Expired miles can be reinstated for $20 per 1,000 miles, but only within 6 months of expiration, and there’s a 50,000-mile annual limit. Restoring 50,000 miles would cost $1,000, and those miles would then be valid for only 12 months.

Emirates previously extended March, April, and May 2026 expirations and tier renewals through June 30, 2026, because of the conflict in the Gulf region. That extension has ended.

Hot Tip:

Wondering when your points and miles expire? Our guide to expiration policies can help you understand the timeline and how to extend it — and which programs allow you to do so.

What’s Changing on June 1, 2027?

Miles earned on or after June 1, 2027, will expire 3 years after the applicable flight or partner activity, with the expiration date moved to the end of that month. Your birthday will no longer matter based on a noticed posted to the Skywards updates page.

For example, miles earned May 10 will expire May 31 3 years later for everyone. Under today’s system, that same May 10, 2024, activity would expire July 31, 2027, for someone born in July but March 31, 2028, for someone born in March.

Miles already in your account aren’t affected, and neither are miles earned before the change. The new system applies going forward.

The impact depends on your birth month. Travelers with late-year birthdays who earn miles early in the year have benefited from extra months of validity. Everyone else should see little downside, and members will get a simpler expiration system after the change.

Final Thoughts

This is more of a fairness fix than a devaluation. Emirates is replacing a bizarre formula with an expiration rule that’s much easier to understand.

This change won’t affect our advice for using points and miles: Check your upcoming expiration dates and don’t transfer flexible points into Skywards without a redemption in mind. Emirates miles can be valuable, but they’re better used than hoarded in a program with an expiration deadline.
