The airport says TSA wait times are over 4 1/2 hours, and you have a flight today. Cue the frenzied task of calculating how much time you think you need to manage the line and make that flight.

I decided to arrive at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston over 8 hours before my flight to attempt to keep my day of travel on track. Here’s how I successfully managed the queue and ended up enjoying a drink in the lounge.

Why Is IAH’s TSA So Strained?

Due to the ongoing government shutdown, now nearing its sixth week, TSA staffing nationwide is impacted as the officers have been working without pay for the second time in 4 months. Workers are quitting or calling out, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has been extraordinarily impacted, with reported rates of over 40% of TSA staff at IAH calling out.

IAH has reduced its operational TSA checkpoints from 6 to 2, as of March 24, with terminals A and E serving passengers. Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports, indicates that TSA has the capacity today to operate one-third to half of the 37 available lanes.1

Hot Tip:

United does not check bags at Terminal A. United passengers are advised to check bags at Terminal C and then proceed to Terminal E for security screening. Review our IAH terminal guide for details on how to move between terminals landside.

My Experience Flying From Terminal A at IAH on March 24, 2026

I could barely sleep last night as my mind raced through strategies for managing this day of travel. I have 2 flights that can’t be moved, and they’re on separate itineraries, so my later flight isn’t protected if I miss my connection.

To make things even more stressful, I’m booked on the last flight of the day to my first destination. That means if anything goes wrong, there may not be another option — and my airline is already asking for volunteers to take a later flight tomorrow.

I tried to leave as little to chance as possible, so I showed up about 8 1/2 hours before my flight. Since I could work either from home or the airport, I had the flexibility to get there early and wait it out if needed.

The first decision I had to make was which terminal to aim for.

My flight was departing from Terminal A, and when I arrived at the airport, Terminal A showed the fastest security wait times on the IAH security webpage. It’s worth noting that times have fluctuated between the 2 open terminals whenever you refresh the feed.

Additionally, TSA PreCheck, TSA PreCheck through CLEAR, CLEAR, and CLEAR Concierge were all closed the day of my flight.

I initially approached the regular entry point for the security screening line, but federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were on-site directing passengers to enter the line at ground level via the subway tunnel. Agents also noted that the line was moving quicker than posted times and maintained a presence throughout the queue.

Terminal A passengers started the queue on the ground level first.

I entered the line just after 10 a.m., and it took about 15 minutes to snake my way from the ground level to the departures level. Shockingly, I made it through standard screening just 20 minutes later. Despite posted wait times of 250 minutes, the whole process took only about 35 minutes from start to finish.

Having experienced this exact line during the November 2025 government shutdown, this process was incredibly organized, passengers were calm, and plenty of staff were on hand to assist and direct folks. I made sure to thank each TSA agent I encountered.

Bottom Line:

Before you head to the airport, it’s worth checking your airport’s security wait times page to see where lines are moving fastest. At IAH, that can mean the difference between spending hours in the wrong line and getting through security much more quickly.

Tips for Managing Anticipated Lines

Review Wait Times

Before you head to the airport, check the real-time TSA wait times. For the last 48 hours, I’ve been monitoring security times at IAH and scouring the web for ways to hack my way through the line quickly.

Consider Alternate Airports and Flights

If your travel plans are flexible, see if you can depart from a nearby airport. From Houston, I was eyeing flights from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) or even driving to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

You should also check with your airline to see whether you’re eligible to change to another flight or what your options are if you miss your flight. United is allowing flight changes for travel dates of March 23 to March 25 (check here for details), and other airlines may have similar policies. Since I’ve cleared security with hours to spare, I’ve put myself on the same-day standby list for a few earlier flights.

Be Ready To Wait the Posted Amount of Time … or Longer

I came prepared with a charging brick, snacks, drinks, and an empty bladder because I fully expected to be stuck in line for hours. The airport advises travelers to use the restroom and buy anything they need before entering the line, since once you’re in it, there’s really no easy way out.

Having TSA PreCheck or CLEAR May Help … or May Not

TSA PreCheck, TSA PreCheck through CLEAR, CLEAR, and CLEAR Concierge are generally touted as winning strategies, but not today at IAH. Having membership in these programs before you get to the airport may give you a leg up on faster lines (or at least help you on your return flight).

Final Thoughts

I was fully prepared to wait for hours at IAH, and I’ll still be at the airport for a while — but thankfully, I’ll be spending that time in a comfortable lounge seat instead of dragging my bag through the TSA line for 4 1/2 hours.

I’ve talked to passengers who spent more than 4 hours in a 2.7-mile security line early this morning and still missed their flights. I also stood in line with someone who showed up just an hour before boarding and somehow got lucky with a faster lane. Tensions are running high across the airport, but knowing your options, packing some patience, and giving yourself plenty of time can go a long way.
